  • The music we listen to, the movies we watch—they're all telling us to keep chasing love, and that we'll finally be happy when we find it.   But is love really all we need?    The love that the world tells us to pursue is all about self, about following your heart’s desires. But what is the Christian worldview on love? When we follow Jesus, we realize that he invites us to reorient the focus of our lives, so instead of chasing love primarily for our own happiness, we are first and foremost to give love—to God and to others.    In

For a Christian Youth with a questions great book.

The third book was Chasing Love: Sex, Love, and Relationships in a Confused Culture, also by Dr Sean McDowell. This book seems to have been written for the Christian teen audience, and in full disclosure I am a 54 year old man who has been married for over 25 years and was not a Christian or a church attender as a teenager. I do have 3 children who are now adult and there may be a point where I would suggest one if them read it or at least sections as it is written for their easy consumption. I will show it to the youth pastor at my church so that he can check through the table of contents to see if there is anything useful.
One thing that is very smart about the design is that the material is broken into 30 small chapters, which leads itself easily for family studies i.e. parents with teenagers or teen groups in church. Dr. McDowell is taking the current “best of” in many categories, lgbtq+, same sex marriage, transgender issues, cohabitation, what is sex for and more. The multiple definitions of freedom reminds me of something from his father Josh McDowell’s writing years ago. Also after having read Embodied by Preston Sprinkle there are some commonalities between the two. I will back up and say that If I was interacting with a new believer and they were most comfortable with a high school reading level this could work as a primer for them, suggesting that they spend the most time of the picking and choosing relevant chapters. I would there fore have 2 ratings for this book for the Christian teen or young single I would say 4.5 out of 5. For the rest of us I would say 3.5 because it does have a lot fo good material but for those outside of its target audience there may be more relevant work.
