Great for Reviewing Calc 1 (or Calc AB)

I bought this book as a refresher since it had been 4 years since I last did any kind of formal calculus class. For that purpose (use as a refresher) this is really a superb text. It offered a quick, plain English summary of a one year high school calc course (Calc AB AP) or a one semester college course (Calc 1 or equivalent). I doubt one could learn single variable calculus from this book alone, but it could also work as a nice supplement for understanding the main concepts of a first year calculus course.

With the exception of one of the later chapters entitled "Integration for Experts", I was able to follow all of the material in the book on first read, making it true to its "For Dummies" moniker. So, again, this is not a book for complete calculus neophytes, but rather a helpful piece of review material or supplemental coverage.

Excellent, crisp, to the point, no fluff, Calculus review text.

This is a great text for someone who has already had Calculus or as a review text for someone who is CURRENTLY taking a Calculus course. The writing is crisp and to the point without the baloney found in many of the modern glitzy tomes. I use it often to brush up on concepts that have long faded away. My suggestion would be to use this text as review material ALONG WITH a full fledged textbook like "Technical Calculus With Analytic Geometry" by Gersting.

" The "Calculus Essentials" and other essential books "For Dummies" are stacked neatly for easy access. Apparently his room mate

My son attends one of the US Service Academies... He has used this book to help crystalize what he knows and fill in a few gaps. So far he reports having "aced" all his quizzes. We have yet to see how he does on his final, but if the quizzes are any indicator, he is on the right track. He sent me a photo of his desk on which he has a place for all his "Frequently used Reference Books." The "Calculus Essentials" and other essential books "For Dummies" are stacked neatly for easy access. Apparently his room mate uses them regularly, as well. Thanks for creating these books and making the shipping so easy.

John Richard

This book was really helpful for me. I am taking Differential Equations right now and my Calculus I and II skills had gotten rusty. If you have already taken Calc I and II then this book will help you blow through what you have already learned, quickly. I would also recommend this to anyone who has yet to take Calc I or II. This book breaks things down into simple, human terms. I bought other Calculus for Dummy books and I am sure they are good too, but this thing gets you up to speed much faster. Hope this helps.

I love this book

I am a mathematics enthusiast and read many different books on calculus for pleasure. I was surprised at the ease of explanations of the subjects in this book. I wholeheartedly recommend this book to students and others seeking to have a grab of the subject in short period of time. This is the best $9 you spend and well worth it.

Great for getting into calc

Very easy to follow. Studying Calc and Analytical Geometry (MTH-131) and this makes the subject way more approachable and easy to grasp. I'd recommend this to anyone looking at calculus as it's a night and day difference.

like many of the very good "for Dummies" books

I am just as confused about calculus as I always was. I was hoping this book, like many of the very good "for Dummies" books, would help me, but it didn't.

A well-written book for beginners

For a while before getting this book i struggled to learn any basic calculus, as i had not taken a course in calculus at that point in time. Without even knowing much about limits, this book has taught me all about the basics of calculus, what i need to learn more.
Mark Ryan is perhaps one of the best teachers of calculus around, and his book introduces the basics of limits, differentiation, Riemann sums and Integration. The way he starts his book, and his sense of humour, is particularly inviting. It prods you to read on, and learn more. There is no grinding, and the information is provided in a way the general reader can understand.
He starts out mentioning why calculus works, and why not to fear it. This gives you to confidence to read further on.
Aside from an introduction to calculus,it is a perfect supplement for those who already know about calculus, or haven't done calculus in a while. Whenever i have a doubt, i often find myself searching through this book.
Highly recommended, also recommended over Calculus or Calculus II for dummies.
