Features & Highlights
Beautiful and inspiring one-dish meals in a bowl!
Buddha bowls, occasionally called “bliss bowls,” “nourish bowls,” or “power bowls,” are the ultimate in one-dish meals. You start with a base of whole grains, rice, noodles, or legumes. Then you layer on a generous assortment of cooked or raw vegetables. Finally, you top the veggies with a boost of protein and then a dressing, sauce, or broth. Buddha bowls are an
easy, healthy meal that can be ready in minutes
and that you can have for breakfast, lunch, or dinner—or, if you like, all three! The Buddha bowl concept is loosely
based on guidance from Chinese medicine
: a meal should have vegetables, protein, and grain. Typically, in a Buddha bowl there is a high ratio of ingredients to broth or sauce and the ingredients are left whole or in large pieces, and not blended, minced, or pureed. Although it is Asian in inspiration, a Buddha bowl can be made with a variety of ingredients from just about anywhere on the planet. Kelli Foster, who writes about food for the popular website The Kitchn, serves up in these pages an amazing variety of Buddha bowl ideas, each one
vibrant with color
,
alive with flavor
, and
oh-so-comforting
to eat. Can you think of a heartier way to start the day than with a Blackberry Millet Breakfast Bowl, a Coconut Quinoa Breakfast Bowl, or a Chai-Spiced Multigrain Porridge Bowl, just three among many
breakfast bowl
ideas? Later in the day, for
cozy meals
with loved ones, how about Warm Autumn Chicken and Wild Rice Bowls, Sesame Tuna Bowls, or Lamb Kebab Bowls? For company, Lentil and Smoked Salmon Nicoise Bowls or Miso Noodle Bowls with Stir-Fried Beef will delight your guests. There are many
vegan recipes
, too, from Cauliflower Falafel Power Bowls to Spicy Sesame Tofu and Rice Bowls and beyond. A special chapter on
fruit bowls
has ideas for power-snacking, as well as for meals. Buddha bowls are elegant in appearance and flavor, but
surprisingly easy to make
—a perfect marriage of convenience and good taste. If you haven't tried them yet, now you have a great reason!

Easy tasty meals in a bowl.
First I apologize if any of my list of recipes in this book is a mess, there's a lot of them so I used dictation and though I tripled checked it, I'm sure a goof or two got left in (seriously, even with spellcheck and my eyeballs reviewing it, this almost got posted with "LamP kebab" left unedited)..
Okay now that, that is out of the way, I'd recommend this book to anyone who is enjoying simple bowl breakfasts, lunches, or dinners. I gave up meat last year and things like bowls (and salads) just make life easy for me, especially since the hubby, who didn't give up meat, also likes them (he describes them as burritos without the tortilla).
While this book does have a lot of meat based recipes, it also has a lot of vegetarian, vegan, and gluten free options and they're all labeled. I do feel like most of the meat based ones could also be used as recipes for those with plant based diets by substituting. There's always tofu but nowadays there's also brands like Gardein and Beyond Meat who make excellent meat replacements for those of us who don't care about cooking enough to cook them up from scratch. I am definitely one of the ones not making my own meat alternatives as I kind of hate cooking. That's another reason I'd recommend this book. If you too dislike page after page of ingredients and directions. Bake this, fry that, boil this? Most of the things in this book don't require much skill. Some do require multiple types of cooking but overall it is mostly basic enough for me.

Looks delicious!
My book came in today and I was so excited to start planning my bowls. My only suggestions would be, I would love to see nutritional information for each bowl and a photo of each bowl. It would make my decision making so much easier.

A Must purchase, for newbies and middling level cooks interested in Buddha Bowls alike!
This is a large very comprehensive book on Buddha bowls. If you are new or just curious and starting out it's a MUST buy!
Very easy to digest it takes you through the basic sauces and ingredients, even teaches you how to make non-gluten rice if that is something you are interested in. There some really good recipes if you like to follow rule by rule, while still allowing for the more creative person to exchange or interact with the recipe as they see fit. This book will give you a very grounded understanding of Buddha bowls, a nice selection of recipes, and a foundation of knowledge on how to create your own recipes.
There are not a lot of pictures. There are enough to make the book pretty and ones for certain recipes but if you have to see a thing before you can make it some of these will be harder to follow. The instructions are very simple but some people are just visual learners.
There is SO much this book has to offer, and it is a nice sturdy book. Ignore the damage in the pictures at the bottom that was done by my local UPS who must have forced the bloody thing into the mailbox with their foot I swear because I could barely get it out! This was well packaged and should have gotten to me in pristine condition.
It arrived on time. And was a steal at under nine dollars!

I love reading cookbooks and trying out new recipes so when ...
I received a copy of this book through NetGally and the publisher for an honest review.
I love reading cookbooks and trying out new recipes so when 'Buddha Bowls' by Kelli Foster was received and as I began to read I was amazed at the layout, the recipes, and the very much needed 'how to cook grains cheat sheet'. I was drawn to the breakfast bowls section. It is very cold in the southern hemisphere right now and having a healthy warm breakfast is very much on my timetable. Any dish that has healthy, warm oats is a priority in our household. The Chai -Spiced Multigrain Porriage Bowls was great first choice and was consumed with many MMMMmms. The 'Sweet Potato Breakfast Bowl' was excellent and the extra added honey made it a very become a family Favourite. The final recipe tried was 'Apple Pie Farro Breakfast Bowls. I love warm apple. The sharp taste of Granny Smith apples and the sweetness of maple syrup just makes this bowl breakfast an extra treat. The cookbook was set out well and the illustrations were an asset to the book. It is sad that there were not more illustrations to show the reader, how many of the bowls recipes were supposed to look. We live in a world where the visual is needed, and to show what the end result of a recipe is meant to look like this would have made book a little better. That is my only gripe about this book. The cookbook as a whole was a treat to read. I recommend this book and give it 4 stars.

Delicious, healthy, and fun!
My family has loved this book so much - it has become part of our weekly rotation. We now have "Tuesday Night Buddha Bowls" each week and love that the theme is the same but there are so many creative options to choose from, including easy weeknight recipes. The sauce section is really fantastic and when I have it together enough we do some sauce or veggie prep on Sunday to really make pulling together one or two of the bowls during the week super easy. The kids also love to help pick the recipe for the week and then layer on the toppings or sauce themselves. Big hit!

Creative and delicious meals for everyone.
I absolutely love this cookbook. The creative and varied dishes really satisfy - from vegan to meats. As exciting are the bowls for breakfast and dessert, which takes the creativity to a new level. My favorite meat dish is the Harisa Chicken Bowl, a real feast with wonderful flavors. For dessert, it’s the strawberry banana nice cream bowl. Lastly, I can’t overstate the value of the chapter on basic sauces and dressings. These recipes are key to mixing it up with the bowls and making sure every meal is new and delicious.

Take some time, but DEEEEEEEELICIOUS!
This book was just what I was looking for - page after page of healthy and delicious real-food meals. They can be time consuming (lots of ingredients, lots of chopping), but I found some shortcuts the 2nd or 3rd time I made a recipe. It's great if you can make 2 bowls in one week that use the same sauce, just double it early in the week and have the leftover sauce later in the week!
This is NOT a vegetarian book, but many of the recipes explain how you can adjust the recipe to make it vegetarian/vegan/etc. (and just use common sense - sub tofu for the meat). My favorite bowl so far is the shrimp summer spring roll bowl. So, so good.

Paradigm shift
To me this is a paradigm shift book. It brings to me and our family a whole new way of cooking healthy, simple, satisfying, and affordable meals. It's what I needed to take me to the next step in healthy, doable, and likable cooking without any real ethnic bent. Just good, healthy, simple but way beyond the ordinary in terms of creative potential. Awesome. Congrats to the author!
