Description

Artist Sandra Boynton has been charming adults for decades with her whimsical, animal-centric greeting cards and her droll sense of humor. When Boynton transferred her weirdly wonderful critters to board books for babies, she made publishing history. These short, hilarious books are perfectly suited to toddler tastes, with their small size, few words, cheerful colors, funny jokes, and silly animals. Blue Hat, Green Hat is all about getting dressed, and stars a very silly turkey who just doesn't get it. (Feet in the hat, pants on the head, etc.) His continuing refrain is "Oops." Moo, Baa, LA LA LA! investigates the sounds animals make, including pigs who sing. Doggies is "a counting and barking book" about the many sounds dogs can make, and A to Z frolics through the alphabet with amusing animal antics from an aardvark admiring to a zebra zigzagging. Parents love Boynton as much as kids do, and these four books in a compact boxed set will no doubt become household favorites! (Baby to age 3) --Marcie Bovetz Sandra Boynton is a popular American cartoonist, children’s author, songwriter, producer, and director. Since 1974, Boynton has written and illustrated over seventy-five children’s books and seven general audience books, including five New York Times bestsellers. More than 85 million of her books have been sold, “mostly to friends and family,” she says. She has also written (with Michael Ford) and produced six albums of renegade children’s music. Three of her six albums have been certified Gold (over 500,000 copies sold) and Philadelphia Chickens , nominated for a Grammy, has been certified Platinum (over 1 million copies sold). Boynton has also directed twelve music videos of her songs, including the award-winning “One Shoe Blues” starring B.B. King, “Alligator Stroll” starring Josh Turner, and “Tyrannosaurus Funk” (animated) sung by Samuel L. Jackson. She lives in rural New England, and her studio is in a barn with perhaps the only hippopotamus weathervane in America.

Wonderful books, but Greatest Hits 2 is better

We love the Sandra Boynton books. This four-book set is a great starter set. Our son, one year old, likes these books more and more as he gets older. They are fun for us to read to him, and he enjoys the pictures. The drawings are very clear (not like some of the books that we have where the illustration is more like watercolor) and that makes it easy for him to tell what he's looking at. I feel like that makes these books better for learning the names of the animals, colors, etc.

All those positive things said, I personally like the titles in the Greatest Hits 2 box set better. Those four tell better stories. These four are not as narrative, with the possible exception of "Moo, Baa, La La La." "A to Z" is an alphabet book with animals, which is not narrative at all. "Doggies" is really fun because it lets you make barking noises, and our son loves the book, but again, it's not really a story. "Blue Hat, Green Hat" depicts a cute story (a turkey who doesn't know how to put clothes on properly -- wears his shoe on his head, for instance), but it has few words, so it lacks the terrific sing-songy rhythm that I love in Boynton's other books.

These are good books, but if you want to experience the best of Boynton, consider Greatest Hits 2 instead of (or in addition to!) this one.

Mean-spirited

We have several Sandra Boynton books and i dislike them. i find that many include messages that seem cruel. In the ABC book, each phrase is 2 words: subject and verb, such as "aardvark admiring" but for the U, the subject is ugly birds and instead of using a verb like unifying, unwinding, uttering, or even "umbrella-jumping" the phrase is "ugly birds being ugly." "Red hat blue hat" seems to be about a member of the group who sucks because he dresses funny, "Hippos go berserk" includes some hippos who show up at a party as servers to cater to the others. I imagine that i am not reading them as the author intended, but how is it okay to use "ugly birds being ugly" - She made a single exception to the pattern (beavers ballooning, cats cleaning) to apparently say that nothing else about these birds matters because they are ugly. "But not the hippopotamus" could be read as a story of how it is okay to make some people feel left out. I know other adults who see the books this way - so how many kids are learning horrible lessons from them? even if those are not the lessons that the author intended-

Nice set for a gift but daughter only liked 2 of the 4. Recommend purchasing separately.

This is a cute little set. My daughter LOVES the "Blue Hat, Green Hat" [[ASIN:0671493205 Blue Hat, Green Hat (Boynton on Board)]] and the "Moo Baa La La La" [[ASIN:067144901X Moo Baa La La La]] books. She wasn't so big on the other two books ("Doggies" and "A to Z"). When I purchased more books for gifts for friends, instead of this set I just purchased the "Blue Hat, Green Hat" and "Moo Baa La La La" books separately instead of buying this set again. I also highly highly recommend the "Hippos Go Berserk!" [[ASIN:0689834349 Hippos Go Berserk!]] book by Boynton. My daughter LOVES that one the most but it is not included in this set.

A excellent collection of toddler/baby books!

My 15 month old loves these books. I went beserk and bought my baby over 100 books when she was born. At 15 months these Boynton books continue to be her very favorites. They have cute colorful animations of animals that make her laugh. She has a special thing she does to the animals she likes most, she presses her face against the book and gives them when looks like a kiss. I call it giving them the "treatment" So far she onyl gives the treatment to Boynton characters. It is a very special thing to get! She really enjoys these books, and they all read like songs with a catchy ryhme that keeps her attention. And at 15 months, being a highly active toddler, these books are the only ones she will sit still too. Barnyarn Dance and The Goes To Bed Book are her favorites as well.

Gotta have 'em.

My first two ladies (now 5.5 years and 4.5 years old) loved these books to death, literally, so I'll be replacing them (both Volumes One and Two) soon after the current Wiggle arrives. We all loved "Doggies" - "Nine doggies on a moonlit night AaaaaaOOOOOOOooooooo" - what fun to read! The ladies loved "The Oops Book" - Blue Hat, Green Hat - as well, because that crazy turkey just *didn't get it*. All of Sandra Boynton's books are wonderful, though.
I've been doing my best to make sure that every baby *I* know has these books in his library; everyone else should do the same.

Great Stories for Little Book Lovers

Sandra Boynton is a favorite author in our home, for our toddler children through beginning school aged. This was a great way to add to our collection for a good price.

Of the four books included, the favorite of my brood are "Blue Hat, Green Hat" and "Doggies." Admittedly, my children have expressed these are their favorites from the voices and emphasis that we have come to do with them. Even those these two are the faves, all the books are requested to be read at one point or another.

We have never been disappointed with Boynton's works.

Greatest Hits.

I decided to get this set since it's supposed to be the "greatest hits" from the author and we didn't have any of her books yet. While this is a nice set to add to a book collection, it leaves a few things to be desired. First, the books (especially "Doggies") aren't really stories with much of a narrative. So while my son enjoys flipping through the pages, it's not quite the same as reading him an actual story book. Second, the construction quality seems a bit poor compared to many of our other board books. My son isn't incredibly rough with books, but they do get tossed and thrown around a bit. These ones haven't held up very well. We haven't tried any other books from this author because I wasn't super impressed with these "greatest hits". Overall, I don't think these are a must have, but we have still enjoyed the set.

Am I the only one who doesn't like these books?

Wow, I wish the reviews for these books weren't so great, because this is the set my dad bought for my daughter based on the reviews. I personally do not like these books though and I wish he had been led to another set instead. I think the illustrations are weird and ugly honestly. I am just not a fan. My daughter doesn't seem impressed by them either and she ADORES books. She would've loved a Karen Katz set instead. And me too lol. I am certainly not complaining about a gift, but I'm just sharing a different perspective to help other potential buyers. This is not the best set for EVERYONE. There is at least ONE person who doesn't like them hehe. Perhaps I am the only one, but if you like more modern drawings with soft/clean lines then this might not be the best set for you.

Love, love, love Boynton!

Package arrived in good condition (one corner of the outer box was a little mashed but not severely) and wrapped in cellophane - perfect for gift-giving! I plan to give these to my niece as an unexpected part to her baby shower gift. I recall hours of enjoyment reading these to my daughter. Hoping she finds as much happiness in reading these over and over again to her daughter.

Short Board Books Perfect For Bedtime Reading

This 4 book set of Sandra Boynton's Greatest Hits is a nice addition to my daughter's night time reading list. The illustrations are whimsical and the writing has a very musical pace that get's better with repeated readings. Because they are board books, they are short and make good supplemental books when my daughter says,"Daddy, I want 5 books tonight." She usually picks one long book and a few of her Sandra Boynton books.

There are plenty of opportunities to sound out words and learn letters, especially with the book "A to Z." The repetition of "Blue Hat, Green Hat" encourages my daughter to read along, when she's not busy falling asleep.

This book set is perfect for a 2-4 year old and I would highly recommend them.
