Description

An Amazon Best Book of April 2019: Set in a depressed suburb of Brisbane, Boy Swallows Universe is the unforgettable story of 12-year-old Eli (and his wise, mute older brother, August) gleaning what it means to be a good man from the parental figures in his life: septuagenarian Slim Halliday, Australia's most infamous prison escapee and the boys' babysitter; his drug-dealer-with-a-heart-of-gold stepdad, Lyle; his actual father, an anxiety-ridden alcoholic; and the mother he reveres. It's also the story of a young boy opposing a genuinely terrifying foe: local businessman Tytus Boz is rumored to reuse the body parts of murdered enemies in his artificial limb company, and he’s a heroin kingpin. Life as usual for Eli is a funny, heartbreaking mix of the mundane and the profane, rendered riveting by Eli’s pragmatism and lack of cynicism. He corresponds with inmates, dreams of a career as a crime journalist, and falls in love. When circumstances force August and Eli to move in with their father, Eli must summon all he’s learned to try to save his mother from crippling depression and, later, himself. Throughout it all, the two brothers slowly piece together a dreamlike childhood trauma. Poignant, hilarious, and endlessly imaginative, this is a love letter to clear-eyed male tenderness set against a series of bloody amputations and bricks of Golden Triangle smack. Recommended for anyone who can appreciate laughing and crying at the same time. --Katy Ball “This thrilling novel takes you along for the ride.” — New York Times Book Review “ Boy Swallows Universe hypnotizes you with wonder, and then hammers you with heartbreak. . . . Eli’s remarkably poetic voice and his astonishingly open heart take the day. They enable him to carve out the best of what’s possible from the worst of what is, which is the miracle that makes this novel marvelous.” — Washington Post “A splashy, profane, and witty debut.” — USA Today "Extraordinary and beautiful storytelling." — The Guardian “This novel about a pair of brilliant and sensitive young brothers in Brisbane in the 1980s trying to survive a swirling, dangerous world of drug dealers, damaged parents, inexplicable supernatural occurrences, true love, mysterious ex-convict babysitters and murderous tyrants is a dazzlingly good . . . . I absolutely loved it.” — Elizabeth Gilbert “At times Boy Swallows Universe will grip your attention and then break your heart. It is a story of love, crime, and hope. It is written with love and told with joy. Trent Dalton is a powerful new voice in fiction.” — Washington Book Review “Dalton’s splashy, stellar debut makes the typical coming-of-age novel look bland by comparison…In less adept hands, these antics might descend into whimsy, but Dalton’s broadly observant eye, ability to temper pathos with humor, and thorough understanding of the mechanics of plot prevent the novel from breaking into sparkling pieces…This is an outstanding debut.” — Publishers Weekly (starred review) “A marvelously plot-rich novel, which…is filled with beautifully lyric prose….Exceptional.” — Booklist (starred review) “An electric novel. . . . a lively, funny affirmation of the human instinct for survival.” — The Times (London) “A captivating and quirky life story that leads the reader on an intense and rewarding journey; highly recommended.” — Library Journal (starred review) “An insightful coming-of-age novel.” — Book Riot “Joyous. Simply joyous. I hugged myself as I read it. My heart raced, swelled, burst; my eyes leaked tears; my stomach ached from laughter. Boy Swallows Universe is—I can’t think of a word more apt—magical. This vibrant, vital, altogether miraculous coming-of-age novel marks the debut of an exquisitely gifted storyteller. . . and what’s more, it’s transformative: After reading Trent Dalton’s book, you won’t be the same as you were before.” — A.J. Finn, author of The Woman in the Window “Welcome to the weird and wonderful universe of Trent Dalton, whose first work of fiction is, without exaggeration, the best Australian novel I have read in more than a decade. . . . The last 100 pages of Boy Swallows Universe propel you like an express train to a conclusion that is profound and complex and unashamedly commercial. . . . The book is jam-packed with such witty and profound insights into what’s wrong and what’s right with Australia and the world. . . . A rollicking ride, rich in philosophy, wit, truth and pathos.” — Sydney Morning Herald “A wonderful surprise: sharp as a drawer full of knives in terms of subject matter; unrepentantly joyous in its child’s-eye view of the world; the best literary debut in a month of Sundays.” — The Weekend Australian “It is such a pleasant shock to encounter a new Australian novel in which joy is shamelessly deployed. . . . It is a story in thrall to the potential the world holds for lightness, laughter, beauty, forgiveness, redemption, and love. . . . [Dalton] invests this unlikely cast and milieu with considerable energy, wit and charm. He delights in the play of language and imagination that a child can summon: the sense in which the clear moral eye of youth can critique and adore simultaneously without judgment or adult moral finessing.” — The Australian An utterly wonderful debut novel of love, crime, magic, fate, and a boy’s coming-of-age, set in 1980s Australia Eli Bell’s life is complicated. His father is lost, his mother is in jail, and his stepdad is a heroin dealer. One boys journey to understanding himself, life, relationships & the universe.

I loved the style of writing and how the other completely puts you inside the mind of the main character. This book also transports you to suburban Australia and it’s underground heroin trade- a place that Perot to treading this book I was unaware even existed. When one thinks of “The Land Down Under” they generally envision pristinely white beaches, gigantic reefs, towering waves of the bluest ocean water and tons of sun. This book isn’t about any of that. It’s about the people who actually live in Australia, not the tourists & how Asians & Aussies come together with the police and politicians, as well as the richest members of society to distribute heroin to the nation. The book tells the story of how a young boy is born and raised in this culture within a culture that seems to be the norm to him and everyone he knows. It’s also about how this lifestyle & the events that ensure forever changes and shapes the lives of Eli and his mute brother. Eli undergoes more than most children ever do in any country. He survives the loss of his finger and his stepfather all in one day. Deals with the imprisonments off his mother & the i joyful reunification of the boys with the estranged biological father. He copes with the loss of his unlikely best friend, an infamous ex-con & probably ex-murderer at least a half a century his senior. He gots from being dirty poor to having more money than he can manage with. He falls in love & finds his way into the career of good dreams while finding himself in every role from victim to hero throughout the course of the book. And all that transpires does so under the watchful eyes of his big brother who brings an air of magic sands intrigue to it all through his claims that he’s been through all these events before because “He comes back.” He tells Eli not to worry because “ It gets real good soon!”

Original, thrilling and captivating and occasionally really funny

The. Ok was really awesome. Best book I’ve read in the past 12 months...maybe even since the gentleman in Moscow. Very original, funny, thrilling, candid and just ‘straight in your face’. Reminded me of the Goldfinch...I’ve recommended it a few times. Congratulations to the author and publisher

Lots of bad language, confusing in the beginning.

Not my taste in books, the foul language was a turn off.

Really loved this book...until I didn’t.

I absolutely loved (5 stars) about the first 400 pages of this book. It really feels to me like it takes a hard turn into a different genre near the end. I’d say it lost the plot, but it’s more like it found it and that really didn’t jive with me. I’m left feeling a bit conflicted. Yesterday I was reading one of my favorite books in years and today I wrapped up a “meh” book. I’ll still likely follow this writer as I really enjoyed his writing style.

I’m in mourning that I finished this book.

This is a great read with lovable, quirky characters. Eli Bell is an unlikely hero, but you’ll love him to pieces. This book expanded my universe and I won’t be the same. What a epic journey.

Not for Me

I admire the author's facility with language and his attempt to tell the story in a less usual way than most novels. However, I did not like the constant digressions and found the writing style to grate after a few chapters. I am not offended by the violence or foul language in the book, but simply did not like the writing style or the ending, which was not consistent with the rest of the novel.

Brilliant. Highly Recommended.

“Boy Swallows Universe” is one of the best books I have read for several years. It is variously uplifting, funny, insightful and sad. However, it is consistently compelling. I devoured the book in several sittings.

In essence, the book is written through the eyes of Eli Bell about his life from twelve to roughly eighteen. It is set in the 1980s in Brisbane, the steamy capital city of the state of Queensland. Here, Eli Bell lives a fascinating life as he grows from child to young man. His best friend is a notorious septuagenarian one-time jail escapee. His stepfather is caring but not there for the long haul, the circumstances of which I will not reveal here for fear of spoiling the plot. His father is an alcoholic with a heart of gold and young Eli worships his mother. He is also close to his older brother who is mute. A curious mix? Most definitely! Yet, the book remains believable. I was absolutely riveted to the action.

For the author, Trent Dalton, this is his first published book. And what a book it is. A tour de force which reveals so much of the human character. It’s very hard to compare it with other books. Dalton’s style is unique. Dalton’s style is brilliant. I can only hope that Dalton has further shots in the locker. He has much to offer.
