Features & Highlights

  • With 49 fabulous blocks to make this all-skill-level book will be adored equally by yarn lovers who are interested in pattern and by quilters who are drawn to yarn.
  • Using patchwork as her inspiration, this is a brand new, specially designed crochet block collection from the wonderfully talented Leonie Morgan. In these 49 patterns, Leonie explores visual illusion, contrast in light and shade, and beautiful geometry with designs such as Flying Geese, Hourglass, Tumbling Blocks and Log Cabin – and all of them can be put together into larger designs. Whether you are building up patterns with leftover yarn or setting out with a specific colour scheme in mind, this is a wonderfully creative process of creating a larger design from lots of smaller units. There are four beautiful projects to make: a shoulder bag, a baby blanket, a geometric cushion and a beautiful lap blanket. A useful crochet techniques section describes the various stitches used, notes on colorwork and reading patterns and charts, and there is also advice on assembling the blocks and edging them. And, once you've got to grips with all of this, you can use the lovely blocks as inspiration to create your own lovely, crocheted block pieces.

UK Crochet Terminology

I love the patterns in this book. The only downside is that it has UK crochet terminology and not US. I didn't see that in the description anywhere. I didn't check the reviews first (my bad). If I had I might not have purchased this book. I'm so used to US terminology that UK will be an adjustment. But as I said first the patterns are beautiful, and I will attempt to "translate" the patterns into what I'm used to. It is a mark of how beautiful the patterns are that I'm willing to attempt the translation (I'm very stuck in my ways). That is why I gave it five stars. Kudos to the author.

English Stitches

Well I was really confused for awhile before realizing this is built in English stitches not American. So when she asks you to do a bunch of double treble stitches she’s really wanting you to do a treble stitch. And instead of a treble she means a double crochet. So do the translation and it will all make a lot more sense.

Why is everything so wonky?

I wanted to love this book. The patterns look gorgeous. Try to follow these instructions and you will lose your mind. The instructions are overly complicated ways of doing things that should be more simple. Even the simplest blocks have unnecessarily hard joins, instructions on stitches and badly described gauge. Given that all are of the same gauge with a DK yarn and size G crochet hook, saying "everyone's tension is different" just doesn't cut it. Everything was floppy and loose no matter how many gauge swatches I did. The "long" treble crochet's make all of these patterns look too loose, and a tighter needle makes the blocks warp. I do not advise following her instructions, but the pictures are pretty. For good crocheters, you can figure out how to make these shapes with easier stitches without buying this book. A real disappointment.

Dream find

Quite unlike the other granny-square books out there: influenced by African-American fibre work; dream book as far as I'm concerned, have made several squares in here now

excellent quilt-inspired crochet squares

I have been having a blast working through the patterns in this book to make a patchwork blanket from some scrap yarn! The attached image is some of my first unblocked squares arranged in a possible blanket pattern.

As someone who has only been crocheting for a few months, this book was my introduction to crochet blocks and to reading both written and visual stitch patterns. Everything about how the patterns are presented is excellent - clear instructions, beautiful images, and useful tips. The introductory and appendix materials are incredibly helpful as well. The amount and variety of blocks included is also excellent, covering many of the classic quilt squares you would expect plus including some other fun ideas and variations. I haven't tried any of the included projects, but they also look very nice.

The only issue I've had working with this book has been that my gauge seems to be very different from the author's and I've had to adjust some of the patterns to use a different block's stitch pattern. In other words, I have needed to combine some of the patterns in the book together into my own frankenpattern to get a result that works better for me. I think it's a strength of the book that I've been able to use it to do so successfully.

Overall, I highly recommend this book if you're interested in learning how to crochet quilt-inspired blocks!
