Features & Highlights

  • In this stunningly creative debut “filled with well-drawn characters…and smoldering passion,” (
  • Booklist
  • ) Nicole Castroman reimagines the origins of history’s most infamous pirate—Blackbeard.
  • When Edward “Teach” Drummond, son of one of Bristol’s richest merchants, returns home from a year at sea, he finds his life in shambles. Betrothed to a girl he doesn’t love and sick of the high society he was born into, all Teach wants is to return to the vast ocean he calls home. There’s just one problem: he must convince his father to let him leave and never come back. Following the death of her parents, Anne Barrett is left penniless. Though she’s barely worked a day in her life, Anne takes a job as a maid in the home of Master Drummond. Lonely days stretch into weeks and Anne longs to escape the confines of her now mundane life. How will she ever achieve her dream of sailing to Curaçao—her mother’s birthplace—when she’s trapped in England? From the moment Teach and Anne meet, they set the world ablaze. Drawn together by a shared desire for freedom, but kept apart by Teach’s father, their love is as passionate as it is forbidden. Faced with an impossible choice, Teach and Anne must decide whether to chase their dreams and leave England forever—or follow their hearts and stay together.

Unfortunately, I lost interest half-way through the book. The romance didn't have me hooked, and the plot was very character driven instead of plot-driven, which was hard to fall in love with since I didn't feel particularly attached to any of the characters.

(I don't like vulgarity, harlequin-type romance

My sister (in her 50's) bought me this book for my birthday (I'm in my 40's) because she actually knows the author, Nicole Castroman (they used to live near each other in Georgia), and had her autograph it for me. Still, I'm picky about books I read, even kind of a book snob. (I don't like vulgarity, harlequin-type romance, or anything too graphic.) I wasn't sure I wanted to read this. I HATE getting bored trying to get into a book. Still, I read this book every night with my 10 year old daughter, and we had a difficult time putting down! She begged me to read it to her, and I willing obliged. This book has adventure, intrigue, mystery, romance, sweet revenge, humor, and surprise twists. I loved to get sucked into a good book or movie and this one left me hanging at the end of every chapter, like the Harry Potter books, the kind you can't put down. Boy, does this book deliver!!! If you're looking for a good teen/young adult novel, clean, yet well developed characters and plot, YOU WANT TO READ THIS BOOK!!!

If you like a slow burn, historical romance, this book is for you!

I’m so glad that I finally got to Blackhearts, as it did not disappoint! This book was brilliant. I’m amazed at how Nicole took a character as notorious as Blackbeard, and turned him into a character that I grew to love. I’d describe this book as a prequel or backstory, before he became the feared pirate. It’s a beautiful love story with an amazing cast of characters and a vivid atmosphere.

Edward “Teach” Drummond the son of a rich merchant has just come back from a year at sea and finds his life a mess. He is betrothed to a girl that he doesn’t love and he’s sick of the society he’s been born into. He just wants to be back at sea, but the only problem is, convincing his overbearing father of that.

Anne Barrett is left penniless and an orphan. She’s hardly worked a day in her life and is forced to take a job as a maid in the home of Master Drummond. She feels like she’s trapped, and dreams of traveling to the island of Curacao where her mother was from.

Edward and Anne meet upon his return home and they are quickly drawn to each other. I absolutely loved this slow burn romance. I love that the story was told from a dual point of view, so we get both Anne and Edward’s perspectives. Edward is so witty, strong, stubborn at times, and without prejudice. Anne could be stubborn and quick tempered, but she is also witty and strong, and I admired how fierce she was even in the face of adversity.

If you like a slow burn, historical romance, this book is definitely for you! I am excited to read the sequel Blacksouls after that cliff hanger of an ending!

Unexpected Love

When I first got this book to begin reading I had very mixed feelings. I usually don't enjoy pirate books so I was a little bit wary going into it. This book was quite surprising to me in the sense that it was not the basic pirate stories that have am used to seeing. In Blackhearts we see very little of the pirate story that I had originally thought that this book would be about. I would call this book more of a romance novel than an action and adventure story, however, even though this book is based around the romance of Edward "Teach" and Anna, the plot was not stifling with "the power of their love" like it is in other romance novels. The plot was refreshing and original and had few twists in the plot, some that I saw coming and some I did not. Even though I absolutely adored this book I am giving it four star for the fact that Anna and Teach's relationship did feel a little bit instant to me at some points, even though it was quite obvious that they were trying to get to know each other. I love the writing in this book. Nicole Castroman does an amazing job of describing feeling and using lots of imagery. One of my favorite things about this book is the depth of the characters. After finishing this book I have become attached to some of the characters. Looking back I can really see the characters development throughout the story and we really come to see Anna and Teach grow along with their relationship. This is a book that I very highly recommend. I am super excited to read Blacksouls, the sequel, and to start getting into the pirate part of their journey.
