Description

From School Library Journal Gr 8 Up—Asta is a boy who dreams of becoming the most powerful magic user in his kingdom. After training his mind and body extensively, he discovers that he possesses absolutely no magical ability at all. Rather than giving up, Asta perseveres and acquires a power called "anti-magic," which may turn out to be the most effective ability of all in a world where "magic is everything." This title is the work of a relatively inexperienced author—and it shows. Tabata has clearly taken his inspiration from popular shonen manga, and elements from series such as "Bleach," "Naruto," "Fairy Tail," and "One Piece" will be instantly recognizable to veteran manga readers. The art is solid: the characters are well-defined and expressive, the panels flow well together and are easy to follow, and the depictions of magic are whimsical. Though Tabata relies heavily on ideas from other series, there is potential here. If the series improves, it could well become the "Naruto" replacement die-hard fans have been longing for. VERDICT Though experienced readers won't find anything new here, this volume is a good introduction to shonen for manga neophytes.—Kelley Gile, Cheshire Public Library, CT Yūki Tabata was born in Fukuoka prefecture and got his big break in the 2011 Shonen Jump Golden Future Cup with his winning entry, Hungry Joker . He started the magical fantasy series Black Clover in 2015.

Great Series. Worthy Of Animation.

Just keeps getting better. It starts just a little slow, but once it kicks off it is one thing after another. All of the events that take places are really entertaining. I never really get bored of this. I really hope this becomes a big anime someday. The characters have their own fun quirks, but they can still restrain their silliness and be seriousness when need; At least to some degree. It makes it believable that they are able to do so. Everyone has their reasons for doing what they are doing, and have their own failings that they try or do learn to overcome.

The main character is a underdog, after all he has no magic compared to the rest of the magic based world. He does though, have a ability to make up for it if he learns and works to use it better. He is silly, a little bit of a dork, but he is and can be very serious where it is needed. He works hard and earns his strength, you see the characters grow and master their skills. Basically, he is a silly guy that seriously works hard and he is actually a calm and smart character. He is not just a idiot that charges straight in like Naruto. If things do not work out, he figures out what he is doing wrong, or figures out a weakness to exploit. I really like his character, basically the same can be said about his rival.

It reminds me of Naruto; Quality and possibly long lasting potential that is. Appropriate for kids, yet hides in more mature and dark material that adults would be more familiar with as well. The darker stuff is done in a way that you get the point more if your a adult, but not too gruesome that it would be bad for kids.

The art is fantastic, and I do not really think there were many, if any, translation issues. Personally, I did not notice any. It is worth every penny.

lots of funny moments. I couldn't put this manga down

Naruto? Fairy Tale? My Hero Academia? Who cares! Black Clover may take inspiration from other artists and mangas, but this series really holds it own. Well drawn, well written, lots of action, lots of funny moments. I couldn't put this manga down. I ordered the first three volumes and ended up buying the rest after finishing the first 3 within a few hours of receiving it.

Trust me. It's a good buy!

Actually a very good volume 1, artwork is impressive, great pacing

I’ve seen the first two seasons of the anime, and I enjoyed it even with its flaws, enough to own them on blu-ray, but wow I have to say the manga is so much better it’s unreal. The artwork is amazing, it’s even more impressive it’s only a volume 1, as more often than not early volumes of anything are a little rough around the edges.

This is funny too, I laughed out loud a lot while reading this, I honestly think the humor is better suited for the manga than it is animation. I seriously thought everything about this was better than the anime, if you like the anime even a little bit, I highly suggest checking out the manga. I had no idea what I was missing, and I regret having slept on the manga for so long. This might be my favorite volume 1 out of all the more recent shonen manga I’ve read, and I’ve read almost all of them. I’m going to place an order for 2-25 so I can catch up to current volumes/chapters, looking forward to the later arcs!

Looking forward for more

The beginning feels like a rehash of a story that we’ve all read and seen before but nonetheless it is entertaining to read and see the character development. I’m giving this series a try and will be looking forward for more.

Funny and action packed!

I have Shonen Jump on the Viz app so I saw this manga series before reading the beginning and got interested. I'm glad I decided to buy this manga! The main character Asta is a pretty cool guy. Plus any mage lover will be drawn in by this manga! There's plenty of humor and action in this book in the form of fighting scenes to get the reader excited. Definitely going to collect this series as it's released in the states!

My son loves it

My son struggles and hates to read. He refuses to read any books but one day he asked for this one, I have no idea where he heard of this series but I’m glad he did.

We’re currently on book 2 and he’s already asking for the next edition.

As for the art and overall read, nothing that a kid wouldn’t run into just watching YouTube. It gets my approval.

good start

Great start to a great shonen. I'd heard sort of eh things about the anime but always heard awesome things about the manga. this first volume has a good bit of reading and exposition but the paneling and pace are very well done. If I had to liken it to anything, i'd say its a more actiony fairy tail with less crying (lol), with some shades of naruto with asta being the naruto standin and yuno as his dark haired stoic rival . Asta is a great protagonist, can be a little grating at times with his endless amounts of energy, but he has that sense of confidence and bravery and never wanting to give up thats truly admirable. got this for my niece for the next time i see her so i'm sure she'll like it
