  • now deliver a novel in which you'll meet their most unforgettable characters yet. Carmen, Jewel, and Regina could not be more different. When they meet as freshmen at Columbia University, they're pretty confident that a friendship among them isn't in the cards. Jewel is Hollywood royalty: as the teenage star of the TV show "Daddy's Girl," her face is instantly recognizable all across America. Now, though, she wants two things-to get a serious education, and to leave her controlling stage mother behind. Regina is the definitive upper-middle-class African-American girl. Her picture-perfect parents are what she calls "black Ward and June Cleavers" and their goals for her are like a stranglehold. No one can see, though, how far Regina's rebellious side will take her (or how treacherous it will become). Carmen is just trying to get by. A child of the projects whose father is dead and whose mother has vanished, Carmen has been raised by her abusive brother. Columbia is the way for her to get a better life-if she can hold down two jobs and keep her GPA up. When the three of them meet, their lives are at a crossroad. And as the years progress, from the 1980s to the present day, they are challenged by drug addiction, fame, secrets from the past, sickness, betrayal, and the darkest things women can face. One of them won't survive. But what will be the lasting legacy of their friendship?

The Bond Between 3 Women

When I first started this book, I wasn't sure as it started off in college and the women were so young, as I finished the book this morning I feel like I have gone through a lifetime with 3 women and I was the 4th woman looking in from the outside. Their story is probably everyone's story in some way, but to me I fell in love with their bond of 'sisterhood', probably because I don't have any sisters, and my best friends have always been my sisters. Three wonderful characters, Carmen, Regina and Jewel, each one interesting in her own right. This is a book I believe that everyone will enjoy, although I do realize that it might appeal to women more the men. One important thing to remember is that men take a major part in this book, and almost all the men play a positive role - I liked this. I am going to miss these characters.

Slow and boring

The first 100 pages or so is pretty good, but as the book goes on, it seems like the characters dont, Sure different things happen to each of them but it takes forever to get to an interesting chapter, and thats pretty much for each chapter.

Purchase, Read & Enjoy

What an exciting journey of the lives of three women from different backgrounds. It goes to show college is more than text books; it's a passage to you good/bad/indifferent decisions. You form who you are, on your own, with your foundation as a guide and influence. These ladies could have been any three college students, coming of age, the details and the imagery was awesome. What a good read. I love it when a book is just GOOD all the way through. I have been recommending and suggesting. Now I'm looking for other books by the author's. Found one, I will let you know how it is(Uptown & What doesn't kill you) that is two different books.

It's hard for me to write reviews because I so wan to name names and details. I don't want to ruin it for the new readers though. So I hope I did the review justice in letting you know it's a MUST read.

To the authors: More more more.....lol

Feel like i know the '5D' ladies personally

Definitely a good read. I have been reading alot of non-fiction lately. I decided i wanted a 'fun'/casual read so i picked up this book. I identified w/ several of the situations faced by the characters either personally or via friends. I found myself taking the book everywhere w/ me (on the bus, at the hair salon, to the park). I enjoyed reading about the characters and how they evolved over time. I couldn't put the book down b/c i wanted to know what happens to each lady.
I am SO ready for a sequel. I am also planning to pick up other books by these 2 authors. You won't be disspointed w/ this one.

More from this duo please!

'BETTER THAN I KNOW MYSELF' has been on my Amazon wishlist for ages, I had just never gotten around to ordering it but when I found myself with a little extra time on my hands I decided it was finally time to pick it up and what a treat I'd been missing! I fell in love with the story of these three college roommates and life long friends from the very beginning. I enjoyed the way the story shifts point of views between the three ladies. I enjoyed the way their story spanned over almost two decades to reveal all aspects of these three women's lives and I also enjoyed watching the characters develop over time.

Honestly, the only thing that kept me from giving this book a five star review was the ending. The beginning of this book grips you from the very first page and keeps you guessing until almost the last, however, what seemed an intriguing plot point at first just seemed senseless and unnecessary to me by the end, more for show than anything else. Had the ending been handled differently this would have definitely been a five star book but please don't let that deter you because all in all it was still a great read!
