Too much time with no closure

I spent too much time getting pulled into a story that didn't end. The last few paragraphs are written more for the season finally of a tv show than a novel. What a shameful way to make a reader spread that much time and then force them to spread more money to get an ending.

Not a standalone book.

Liked the book until it stopped half way thru the story. I can understand have the same characters in several books but they should be standalone

SHADES OF GRAY WANNABE

This book is well written, but it has some major problems. First and foremost, I felt it is a Shades of Gray wannabe. It reminded me of the highly successful series in many ways with the lead characters and the sexual proclivities. It is slightly different, but still has the feel of the Gray novels. Secondly, it could have used some good editing to make the story flow a little better and more smoothly. The writer is an excellent writer, no question about that. However, I found myself speedreading to get through some of the tedious parts. Finally, my biggest complaint is the ending. It was a cheap shot and I'm very disappointed in the author for ending it in this manner. It leaves you hanging. For me, this is not an inducement for me to read the next book. Other best selling authors have found the fine line between ending a novel with a satisfying conclusion while still wetting the appetite for future novels. This ending did not accomplish this. Interesting read, but not one of my favorites.

Disappointing

DISCLAIMER: SPOILERS about the story.
I had great hopes for this book. The cover should have been a hint, but..... the story begins with the main character in very grim captivity and no prospects of escape. Then it skips to a young woman with a nice life with a husband and 3 kids. We have to assume that this is who is being held. Before we find out why she’s being held, the woman gets a dream job, has sex in an elevator with a stranger etc, etc. The story then becomes some shade of Grey, which I’ve already read and am not interested in going there again. When her female boss asks our main character to take over a popular “dungeon” and become a “Mistress”, she just can’t possibly refuse because now she’s involved with the “stranger” and there are just too many perks to the job to turn it down. Well, that’s where she lost me. I no longer care about her, her life, what happens at the dungeon, or if we ever find out why she was captured in the first place. No, I just don’t care anymore.

The author needs to work harder

Kind of a silly book. One minute a few of the characters are nasty and then they are nice. Kind of unbelievable. Also I don't like books that end abruptly and force you to buy the next book of the series. I'm not!

A gripping story of life, love and choices.

Bedrock is captivating and interesting. As a book it tells a number of stories from the lives of the characters which gives a feeling of depth. At its heart, though, this is a story about choices and the opportunities that life throws up.

There is love, betrayal, intriguing personalities and lovely scene setting. This is a book with plenty of adult themes and while not graphic in detail it is not shy about its content. There is also something just beyond real about this book, somehow just too much neatness comes out of the chaos at times.

Bedrock hits a fine balance and I found this book to be very entertaining and gripping and once started I found it difficult to stop reading, to read what was to happen next.

All about choices

Bedrock is all about the choices to be made and when a choice it made how its impact ripples out from there. Throughout the story, Addie makes decisions that lead her to the next to the next and so on. Eventually, each of those decisions comes back around in another part of her life, for good or bad.

Initially, I did not like Addie. I was confused by her choices and by how she was described. At times, she seemed strong in one aspect, or particularly good in one area of her life but then she wasn't. I did end up finding myself understanding her more and rooting for her to find what she is seeking in her life as the story progressed.

Bedrock is written in third person and initially I found that difficult to transition to as so much of what I have read lately is first person. It felt more narrative and as if I wasn't truly part of the story, just someone looking in and not getting invested as much in the characters. As the story progressed, I found myself becoming more involved and engaged once more dialogue was part of the story.

Overall, I felt like there was much that was unsaid that left me wanting more details - the relationship, or lack thereof, between Addie and her in-laws; moments with her children that invested me in her relationship with them; and more on how Addie's and Patrick's relationship changed so significantly after their children were born. I liked seeing Addie grow and change as her world opened up. I fell in love with William and all his strengths and vulnerabilities. I was constantly wanting an HEA for Addie, but also really appreciated that Bedrock made me think about the complexities of relationships and how sometimes an HEA is not so clear cut. I really hope there is a second book, as I'm not quite ready to let this one go with the way it ended. No cliffhanger, all, there were just some things I would love to see play out further.
