Description

"Don Kroodsma’s passion for birdsong is infectious, and this guide will have any birder (including me) listening to birds with new insight and appreciation after reading it." — David Allen Sibley, author and illustrator of The Sibley Guide to Birds "Watching birds is only half the fun—knowing how to listen to them is the other half. This handy audio book teaches you how to listen to birds and to understand who they are and what they are saying to each other. It will double your enjoyment—both outdoors and indoors." — Greg Butcher, National Audubon Society"There is no better guide to the fascinating world of birdsong than Don Kroodsma, who in this handy book shows that even in the average backyard there is drama, mystery, and excitement, all bound up in the song of a bird." — Scott Weidensaul, author of Living on the Wind and Of a Feather "Don Kroodsma’s latest book is a gem. Each page brims with enthusiasm and erudition, the product of countless hours spent in 'deep listening'—applying the attentiveness and aesthetic appreciation of a musician to the songs and calls of birds. Even advanced students of birdsong will find much that is new in these pages—and refreshingly well composed!" — Ned Brinkley, Editor, North American Birds"Don Kroodsma once again gives us a reason to listen to birds as individuals. What a gift to all birders to be able to listen to these birds with new ears." — Bill Thompson, III, Editor, Bird Watcher’s Digest"With his trademark clarity and charm, Donald Kroodsma takes us beyond identification and into the realm of understanding. What are the different functions of the multiple songs given by many birds? How do songs differ among individuals? And what causes those differences? These are cutting-edge scientific questions, and it is to Kroodsma’s credit that he provides compelling and easily understood answers." — Ted Floyd, Editor, Birding From the Inside Flap GET TO KNOW BIRDS BY EAR WITH THIS ENGAGING, ONE-OF-A-KIND BOOKDiscover seventy-five unique birds from Eastern and Central North America as you enjoy their sounds at the touch of a button—reproduced in high quality on the attached digital audio module—while reading vivid descriptions of their songs, calls, and related behaviors. For birdwatchers

Bought this for an 8 yr old who likes birds and she loves it. She takes it to the park and plays the different songs. It is so life-like that the male birds come around to check out who is in their territory and she gets a close view. The book looks huge in the photo but is only 7" x 8" so a child has no problem handling it. Contains 132 bird songs, but most are variations for each bird. Glad I got it.

Listen to the birds

Love these books. I now have both the Eastern and Western versions. I have literally taken them out on the patio and played different varieties of birds and watched the reactions of the birds. Fascinating and fun!! Can't wait to see what birds I can attract in the West. Very informative book and the added bonus of being able to hear what bird you're investigating is great. Highly recommend.

Overall good. Poor volume, and having to go through each code to get the bird call you want.

Homeschool family. Came highly recommended from different groups. Kids love it. Two downfalls, the poor volume and having to go through each call. I wish you could type the bird call sign/code in.

Great book. Love the idea of being able to ...

Great book. Love the idea of being able to identify birds by their sound because of this book. The only problem I have is the label or title of the book. It should be more specific or simple concerning which region the birds are in (for the geographically challenged bird watchers). For instance, I live in the Midwest and would have loved to seen a book that listed the Midwest on the cover. I bought the wrong book initially and bought the right one once I received the first book and realized, after going through the book, I had the wrong one.

My boys try to identify birds now

I need to get another copy of this book because a 5 year old boy loved our copy so much I gave it to him as a birthday present. We leave the book sitting out near a framed poster of North American birds and a pair of binoculars. My kids love spotting a bird, identifying it, and then scrolling to the bird’s song

I love the new smaller size

I love the new smaller size! I hit the play "ALL" and my parrot loves it. He has even learned several of the bird calls and in the precise order. Our autistic son like to flip through the book and push the button for the matching bird song. Excellent.

Five Stars

Waiting for pre-order. These books are worth the wait.
Got it! Thanks!
If you have kids and go camping, this book is a must have. The batteries last forever. The volume is loud enough that other birds will hear it and come around. Just remember there are some calls that are seasonal, have different meanings etc.
I new it was pre-order when I bought it. I did not care. This was worth the wait!
Thank you!
I will buy it again if this one gets ruined in the rain, or kept by someone that seemed to like it better than me or any other reason. I'll always have a copy.

Contains a lot of duplicate birds

These books are great for the average person looking to identify local birds by their picture and how they sound. The pictures and sounds are clear and will often include info about each bird's male/female differences, breeding, migratory patterns, etc.

I'm only giving it 3 stars though because the forward button on my New copy does not work, making scrolling more tedious, but also because half of this book contains the same birds found in the Central/Eastern version by Kroodsma. I counted only about 30-35 out of the 75 birds in this book that are not in the other book. I expected each book to have 75 unique birds, but this is not the case; Since I live on the East coast I'm choosing to buy the Central and East book instead. However, I suspect a person living on the West coast may prefer this version if they had to choose only one book.

But overall these are still really great books if you're into birds.

Packaging issues w fulfilled by Amazon - book is nice though

Update: returned to Amazon for a replacement, which arrived the next day. The new book had no sticker and came with a cover on the battery slot as expected. Not sure if I got someone’s returned item the first time, instead of the new item I paid for. My husband loves the book, although it would be easier to use if there was a number pad to queue up a certain bird sound instead of toggling backwards or forwards through allll of them. Adding another star to the initial review

If you’re planning on gifting this to someone, be aware that Amazon may have put their barcode sticker right on the front cover, with no plastic wrap to protect the item. It also appears to be missing the battery cover, although batteries were supplied. Very annoyed, and since we have a baby, probably will have to return and see if we get one with a battery cover, as there is the space for it.

Book itself is cool, comes with batteries and plays bird sounds for tons of birds and has good information on them.

Gorgeous & practical educational book

I LOVE having this book in our homeschool library. The sound library for birds is remarkable and so fun. In just a couple of minutes, we learn a new bird and play "name that bird" reviewing the sounds of the birds we've already learned. It's just the best way to learn about birds! The illustrations are beautiful and there's just the right amount of information. I also really appreciate there there are sometimes more than one bird call per bird. It's rich.
