Not very realistic

Most books I’ve read about being kidnapped focus mainly on the captivity and not the escape, so I liked that this book began with the escape and focused on the aftermath...however, the aftermath just wasn’t realistic at all. The main character seems to overcome her abduction, torture, etc. fairly quickly & I don’t believe that anybody who has been held captive for eight years would be back to living a normal life so quickly. The main character has a daughter, but it seems the author didn’t really know where to go with that character - it seemed ever other page the daughter was “fast asleep” - the author really could’ve added a different perspective by including the daughter more in the storyline. I did like how the story was told from four points of view. But it just wasn’t a very realistic story, and the author seemed to try to throw in random twists and turns to make it thrilling but it just added to how unrealistic it was.

I was left very disappointed. This book cannot be compared to Girl on ...

As an avid reader of suspense novels I was looking forward to this book based on the description. The first chapter does grab you in with such a shocking, twisted storyline, but quickly it fades. The writing style was very juvenile and bordered on silly. The characters lacked depth. I was looking forward to diving into the mind of a girl kept captive for years. Instead, the character was shallow without any detail to understand what she went through. The other characters in the story were much of the same. I felt it was a very choppy story without much direction. I was left very disappointed.

This book cannot be compared to Girl on the Train, The Good Girl or The Woman in Cabin 10. I applaud the effort being her first novel, but unfortunately it left me frustrated and feeling I wasted many hours.

Not as advertised

Like most people, I bought this book based on the compelling blurb on it’s cover. And like most people, I was sorely disappointed.

It has an intriguing premise: Lily, a young woman who’s been held captive in a basement as a sex slave since she was a teenager, manages to escape with the 6 year old daughter she’d had with her rapist/captor, Rick.

Now, if you read the blurb and read the opening chapter of her escape, you’d think that this would the beginning of a taut suspense thriller. Instead, Lily and her daughter make it home safe and sound and killer quickly caught within the first few chapters. What follows is a family melodrama as Lily reunited with her twin sister, Abby, her mother, Eve, and her old high school sweetheart, Wes, while Rick rots in jail.

It ended up being a paint-by-numbers story akin to a Lifetime TV movie. Painfully boring and laborious to read. I didn’t even finish. I got about 85% through the book and had enough. No one is likable. No one is sympathetic. Not worth the time.

I saw this book recommended on Facebook and wasn't sure what to expect

Read it in one sitting!
I saw this book recommended on Facebook and wasn't sure what to expect. I was pleasantly surprised. The story and the charecters kept me mesmerized from the beginning. Due to the subject matter, I liked that it did not go into detail about what the captor did to his victim.
I read it on a day off from work, and didn't get any of my chores done because I had to finish it. Great quick read too!

Seems familiar to "Room", it's somewhat interesting, but drags throughout the book

I didn't like any of the characters, the story was pretty interesting but the characters and their relationships were extremely cheesy and didn't seem real. A lot of things are very over done. It was okay.

too similar to Room

I'm only 50 pages in but so far it's a rip off of Room, from the nickname for the child ("Chicken"), to the free sister sleeping with the other's boyfriend and being pregnant by him. Not sure if I'm going to finish or not, but if I was the author of Room I'd be suing.

Hooked from the first page

This is the first Hachette book that I have found to be well written. Overton has extreme talent and I hope to see more fiction from her.
