This book is filled with examples of loosely painted animals, exercises focusing on studies of painting parts (dog nose, cat eye), as well as more complete animal paintings.

Animals with step-by-step examples include elepahants, hedgehogs, dogs, cats, koala, starfish, and octopus.

If you are looking for a book on hyper realistic painting, this may not be the book you're looking for. If you are looking for inspiration and tips for painting loose, flowing, expressive animals, I highly recommend it.

This book is a must have for all watercolorists. I have all of Jean's books, and they are all excellent! I especially love this one because it is about animals. Jean Haines is one of the most positive people I have ever learned from, as well as the most talented, and masterful in all forms of watercolor subjects. She is a master in color combinations, compositions, and learning to be connected to your subject. All of this and more is eloquently demonstrated in this book. Even if you don't paint, you will have a magnificent time in your journey through this book. No doubt, you will feel Jean's passion and love for watercolor and animals. I find it a privilege and honor to learn from Jean via book or in her watercolor school. Well done Jean, in yet another amazing book! See you in class!

A Beautiful and Vivid Watercolor journey learning to reflect the spirit of animals

I purchased this book as I have long admired the loose, colorful style of this artist and have found her techniques transferrable to multiple subjects, but I had never attempted animals. To my delight, I found I read the book cover to cover as Jean Haines is not only a talented artist, but an infectiously passionate and joyous writer about what it is to be an artist. The book is full of excellent tips and techniques for multiple uses, ie eyes. She offers step by step instructions along with coaching about instinctual artistic growth that will serve every level artist. I highly recommend this reference book for every artists library, with techniques that transfer to many subjects and are offered at several skill levels.

This book is filled with lovely paintings by a master artist. A great inspiration for advanced watercolorists looking for a challenge. If you are a beginner, this book might not be for you. The tutorials are few compared to her earlier books. The techniques and use of products are not for all skill levels.

I am surprised at how much I’m enjoying Jean Haines new book. I have several of her books - all because they were either included with a DVD or a free promotion; in fact this was purchased with a gift card and points - so free again! I have purchased most of her DVDs (which I much prefer!). I was afraid this was going to be more of the same - her books are pretty redundant, (which I understand) and she demonstrates many animals in her other books & DVDs. In this book she introduces different mediums to add texture and interest, something she has not mentioned previously; it’s a fun book. I would like to see her produce this in DVD form and I would buy it.

Artist life changing

I’m an artist pretty stuck in my figurative style of watercolor painting. I was attracted to the idea of an “atmospheric” or suggestive technique. I began trying to use the step-by-step lessons and LOVED what I produced. Almost overnight my paintings took on a sense of freedom, movement and emotion. Evocative is the word. The author made each lesson fascinating. I highly recommend this author.

I love this book!!

As usual, Jean Haines knocks it out of the park with this lovely watercolor tutorial book. I have more of a realistic style of painting and am trying to learn to loosen up my paintings. This book is full of wonderful animals, tips on watercolor painting in general, and tutorials on loosening up and being free with your paintings. I've already done a few of the paintings in the book. While they aren't perfect they are still much better than when I started!!
