Questions for Discussion    1. The novel alternates between Pepper&;s story in 1960s America and Annabelle&;s story in 1930s Europe in the days leading up to World War II. Did one woman&;s story resonate more strongly with you? Do you think each woman&;s story has the depth to be told on its own? Why do you think the author chose to tell their stories together?   2. The novel is divided into movements, as if it were a piece of music. Do you think this was just an artistic choice made by the author, or is there a deeper meaning? What does Annabelle&;s love of playing the cello reveal about her character?   3. Annabelle and Pepper meet over the sale of a 1936 Mercedes Special Roadster. What does the Mercedes represent for each woman? Why do you think Annabelle chooses to help Pepper? How would you characterize the relationship between Annabelle and Pepper over the course of the novel?   4. As young women, both Annabelle and Pepper find themselves hiding a pregnancy borne out of a relationship with a married man. Despite the differences in time and place, how are their situations similar? Each woman chooses to deal with her pregnancy in a different way. Why do you think Annabelle chooses to marry Johann? Why does Pepper plan to raise her child on her own? In what ways do their time periods impact their decisions?   5. Discuss Pepper&;s relationship with her family in comparison to Annabelle&;s relationship to her family. How do these familiar relationships impact each woman&;s understanding of romantic love?   6. Annabelle and Pepper are both forced to make difficult decisions for the safety of their children, and in these decisions we see the strength of a mother&;s love. How does this compare to the way a father&;s love is presented throughout the book? Do Johann, Stefan, and the senator face difficult decisions as fathers?   7. Annabelle, Stefan, and Johann are a compelling love triangle with no easy resolution. Did you find either Stefan or Johann to be a better match for Annabelle? Were you tempted to characterize Stefan positively because of his role in the Resistance and Johann negatively because of his allegiance to the Nazi party? Did your opinion of each man change over the course of the book? Despite their differences, in what ways are Stefan and Johann similar men?   8. Each character in Along the Infinite Sea hides a major secret. Discuss how the presence of a secret radically shifts each character&;s life. In your opinion, which secrets should have been revealed? Which should remain hidden?   9. Throughout the novel, the author keeps her own secret&;the identity of the man with whom Annabelle escaped to America. Were you surprised by the reveal? Why do you think the coda is told from Stefan&;s point of view?   10. How does Annabelle&;s character change over the course of the novel? How does her evolution compare to Pepper&;s? What role do you think Annabelle will continue to play in Pepper&;s life? Read more

Regret that I finished this book

This book was infuriating. All of the characters were ridiculous and implausible. Each one more attractive than the last. Men ceaselessly commenting on the beauty of the women. The plot was absurd. The use of Nazi Germany as some sort of romantic background was, frankly, sickening. A main character’s competing love interests are a high-ranking Nazi commander and a Jewish resistance fighter? You’ve got to be kidding me. She manages to free the Jewish man from Dachau (yeah, right) and the author skips right over the horrifying conditions of the camp. And - spoiler alert - even though her lover has been imprisoned in a concentration camp by the man who purportedly designed the camps - she stays relatively happily married to the Nazi for three decades and hides his identity in the US? It’s terrible that the author could somehow romanticize this period. This is not historical fiction but a whitewashing of one of history’s worst atrocities to sell a romance novel. I’m appalled that this book has gotten decent reviews.

Not worth it

This plot centers around two women who get connected in a totally unrealistic way. Both of them are beautiful and probably gifted women but both of their lives seem to center only around satisfying their sexual appetite. It could
have been a good story but the concentration on sex and the unnecessary amount of bad language ruin it. This
my first book by this author and I will not read another. There are too many other good books out there!

Didn't want the book to end

Stayed up reading till 2 a.m. because I couldn't wait to learn all the secrets and find out what really happened. This morning I'm sad that I finished it so fast and wish there was a sequel. The characters are complex and well developed, it will seem like you really know these people. First you may like them, then despise them, then change your mind. The settings are beautifully described, you can almost feel the sea breeze, the grayness of Germany, the humidity of Florida. The story shifts between pre WWII Europe and America in 1966 which kept me intrigued. Annabelle and Pepper are both strong women that end up in similar circumstances - what a difference 30 years makes! This book would make a great movie too!

Read for fun and surprises!

My Book Club read this and so I ordered it. Williams is quite a story teller and takes you on a trip to two very different eras. A good read.

So sad it’s the last of the Schuler sisters series!

But Pepper was a great character and I really loved reading the book. I wish I could have made it last longer, but devoured it in a few hours.

Disappointing

Beatriz Williams is one of my go-to authors, so it pains me to give this book a “meh” review. As with all Williams’ books, the prose is beautiful. Few can write a sentence as well as Williams does. Sadly though, I found the triangle uninteresting. None of the characters were very likable. Chalk this up to a rare misfire from a really good author.

A car connects two women with parallel lives

This is the third book in the series. Pepper has fixed up the Mercedes and has sold it at auction, in hopes that the money will help to support her and the baby to be as she figures out how to keep herself separate from the married politician who is the father. She is asked to meet with the buyer. She is surprised that the woman who has bought the car has a personal connection to its past. Annabelle takes her in and offers her the guest cottage while she figures things out. The book alternates between Annabelle’s past in Germany with a Nazi officer husband and a Jewish lover and Pepper’s own path of discovery with the aid of Annabelle’s son. The book keeps you on the edge of your seat until the very end.
