Description

From the Inside Flap If done right, inclusion positively impacts every part of society. Creating a diverse, inclusive, and equitable culture isn't easyx97it requires courage, dedication, and a lot of hard work. Real inclusion requires you to take responsibility, and sometimes have uncomfortable conversations or make hard choices. Succeeding at allyship means you doing what you can to contribute to and create cultures where fairness, respect, and mindfulness are the rule, rather than the exception. This is the key to building environments where everyone feels welcome, valued, and safe. The goal of Allies and Advocates is to move organizations and society as a whole beyond mandated diversity initiatives and achieve long-term and impactful change. You will understand how to integrate innovative ideas and traditional approaches to build solutions that work best for you. Everyone has some degree of privilege. Rooted in author Amber Cabral's years of experience in helping organizations ignite behavior shifts to create inclusive cultures, this practical, real-world guide shows you how speaking up and using your privilege is allyship and advocate behavior at its very best. You may not always see the many ways you have privilege; you have likely encountered challenges or bad experiences in your life. This is perfectly normal. Sometimes privilege doesn't come from something you did, but rather from something about your identity that you had no control over. Recognizing your own privilege empowers you to create visibility and opportunities for those who are dealing with the impacts of systemic oppression. Addressing equity and inclusion is something that many people aren't brave enough to talk about, yet bravery is essential to learning how to be better allies and advocates. If you are looking forward to building a culture of inclusivity and want to learn how to use your privilege to be a better ally, Allies and Advocates: Creating an Inclusive and Equitable Culture is a must-have. Practical info you can use. Straight talk on an important topic!

First of all, I love Amber’s straight, no chaser tone. She tells it like it is which I find refreshing for a business book. Secondly, D&I is not my expertise but this book feels like a primer that is quickly giving me the lay of the land and bringing me up to speed. I appreciate the author for taking the time to walk us through these topics - some of which are sensitive.

A compelling explanation on HOW to be inclusive, equitable and diverse

I have not read any other text that explains how to approach the transformation process involved reaching inclusion, diversity and equity goals as well as this one. This isn't the same old stuff that everyone regurgitates about diversity, equity and inclusion. I really appreciate that the book chooses practical and relatable examples and vocabulary to guide readers along in their journey. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to be a better human. This book could not have come at a better time in history. I cannot wait for the audiobook and to have this book featured in my book club.

Perfect place to start learning about becoming an ally!

Amber's book Allies and Advocates was just what I needed to think about how I could show up as an ally for people in need. I honestly think this is perfect for experts and people new to the allyship and inclusion space overall.

It was so good that I bought 5 books! One that I will keep and four more to give to friends and co-workers!

I highly recommend this book!

I just finished this book, which I originally purchased as an extra source for a paper I was writing on building inclusive communities. What I found was an excellent book for that topic but also a thought provoking book on advocacy and allyship and building a framework for inclusive communities by understanding more about the language of inclusion and the interaction of those principles in purpose and practice. The book is laid out in chapters that can be read one at a time or consumed in sections. Each chapter had questions at the end that question the reader about whether this is new information to them or not. While it is not new information for me, I think that this is the beauty of the book. If we are going to really build and live in inclusive communities we need people to enter at whatever stage they are at. I recommend this book as an excellent source to begin and continue those conversations.

Perfect read for black history month

This book was mailed to me from work. And as a black person, I shuddered from the things I read that I never knew about. This is a great book if you still don’t get it. Few quotes from the book I’ve been gathering for a work discussion:

“You’re going to have conversations that are difficult. It is in those moments that you will be tempted to decide to check out. Don’t. We need you. This is not personal. You didn’t pick your skin. No one else picked their skin either”.

“Seeking to learn about a marginalized person’s experience comes with a lot of feelings, curiosity and difficult to digest information. You are going to feel a lot. You are going to be tired. You are going to be frustrated”.

“Lynchings were a common occurrence during segregation. A quick Google image search of Lynching in America returns hundreds of images of hanged Black bodies surrounded by smiling White people”.

“The 13th amendment of 1865 says Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States or any place subject to their jurisdiction.
Read that again.
Imagine being newly freed. Imagine there is a loophole that can send you back into involuntary servitude”.
