Helpful with learning the testable content.

This book was really all I used to study for the CCRN. I liked that it was concise and easy to read. I purchased the AACN on-demand online review, listened to it in its entirety once, and found that the content of this book reflected the AACN prep course so I focused on the book.

HOWEVER, when I sat for the exam, I was SHOCKED to find that none of the questions were at all like any of the practice tests/questions I had done, with Barron’s and with the AACN. The test questions are based almost exclusively on critical thinking and applying knowledge to clinical practice. Like, seriously...after the first 25 questions I was convinced that I studied the wrong thing. I scored 103 out of 125...interestingly scoring lowest in caring and ethical practice which I had reviewed and scored really highly in on all practice questions. I work in a medical ICU, with no cath lab, no PA catheters, no cardio-thoracic surgeon, no neurosurgery, no trauma....basic critical care services, and I did really well in all areas other than caring/ethics.

I highly recommend, just know the questions are NOTHING like the practice questions and practice test in the book. Oh, and I noticed that a few other reviewers couldn’t find the online practice tests. They’re a thing, you have to register with the website on the little cardboard page of the book then answer a question to verify your purchase. Then you’ll have access to two more online practice tests.

I passed passed the CCRN exam by studying this book for a month!

This book was extremely helpful when studying for the CCRN. I used the book as well as a review class and felt this book was more helpful than the review class. It provides all the information you need to pass the CCRN exam. I passed mine in Feb 2021 and this was the only book I studied the month before my exam.

Best CCRN Review Out There

I studied for the CCRN using several resources - different books, video lectures, Youtube videos, etc. I think that using multiple resources is the best way to study for this test, but some resources are better than others, and Barron's is the best print material there is for CCRN review.

The questions on the practice test are the most like the actual CCRN in my experience, and while you will learn a ton from this book, it won't waste your time with minute details that don't matter.

Incidentally, if you just want to learn more about ICU nursing, this is a great resource for that, too.

Just what I needed

Purchased from Amazon. The code in the book didn't work. I reached out to Barrons they sent me to someone else. Everything was resolved in 48-72 hrs. Everyone was responsive and helpful. Hence the 4 stars. As it relates to the contents in the book, it was very very useful.I've been an ICU RN for over a decade some things I knew some I didn't. This book helped me to understand or connect the dots. I was also in an acute care program when I was studying for CCRN this book helped me with preparing for my NP boards.I highly recommend this text. I used this book and the questions on the AACN website to test my knowledge. I passed both exams 5 days apart. God is able.

NOT recommended

I have been a critical care nurse for 15 years, this was my second time taking CCRN. This book had conflicting data between chapters, listed drug choices that did not align with other trusted medical sources, was missing important information and had some info that was just completely incorrect. To add to the frustration, the practice tests covered info that wasn't in the book. Taking the test is stressful enough, using this book just made it worse.

My only study resource study

Solely used this to study for the CCRN. To be honest I only studied the major sections and still passed. I think this book does a good job at highlighting the important things to know for the exam having taken it already. If you study this thoroughly enough and do decent on the practice tests, you should be fine on the exam in my opinion. Good luck!

There is really no way to prepare for CCRN

Reviewing the book made my practice of Critical Care more insightful but Barron's goes in great detail on areas not covered on the test. Sure I passed CCRN. My judgement from experience in ICU and Cardiovascular ICU helped me more than the book. In fact some of the CCRN questions were vague and hinted at concepts that I could not have answered without years of judgement, experience and discussing with my colleagues. CCRN would give me a question that lacked details to sufficiently allow me to say I am completely confident with one choice over the 4 choices given to answer that question....However, many of the straight forward questions were quickly answered from my thorough study with Barron's.. So basically one should have a balance of experience and knowledge to tackle the CCRN. I would give it a year of full on patient care before prepping for the exam and then realize when you have that paper that says you passed CCRN....It does not end there. It is a lifetime of learning.
