Features & Highlights

  • The basis for the Emmy award-winning limited series
  • starring Hugh Grant and Ben Whishaw
  • A behind-the-scenes look at the desperate, scandalous private life of a British MP and champion manipulator, and the history-making trial that exposed his dirty secrets
  • While Jeremy Thorpe served as a Member of Parliament and Leader of the Liberal Party in the 1960s and 70s, his bad behavior went under the radar for years. Police and politicians alike colluded to protect one of their own. In 1970, Thorpe was the most popular and charismatic politician in the country, poised to hold the balance of power in a coalition government.   But Jeremy Thorpe was a man with a secret. His homosexual affairs and harassment of past partners, along with his propensity for lying and embezzlement, only escalated as he evaded punishment. Until a dark night on the moor with an ex-lover, a dog and a hired gun led to consequences that even his charm and power couldn’t help him escape.   Dubbed the “Trial of the Century,” Thorpe’s climactic case at the Old Bailey in London was the first time that a leading British politician had stood trial on a murder charge, the first time that a murder plot had been hatched in the House of Commons. And it was the first time that a prominent public figure had been exposed as a philandering gay man, in an era when homosexuality had only just become legal.   With the pace and drama of a thriller,
  • A Very English Scandal
  • is an extraordinary story of hypocrisy, deceit and betrayal at the heart of the British Establishment.

Sordid But Amusing

Jeremy Thorpe was a rising star in the constellation of the British Political Establishment in the 1960s and 1970s. Debonair and devious, he became leader of the Liberal Party at a young age and seemed well positioned to gain high political office. But Thorpe had a problem: he was a gay man with a penchant for troublesomely indiscreet lovers. One of those lovers, a ne'er do well named Norman Scott, kept turning up at awkward moments, asking for money and attention. Eventually Thorpe decided he had had enough of Scott and set in motion an elaborate scheme to have him murdered. The scheme failed and Thorpe and his henchmen ended up in a sensational trial that riveted Britain's attention. Though Thorpe and the rest were eventually found not guilty, their careers were ruined and their lives irreparably altered.

As is the norm with British sex scandals, this is a sordid and tawdry tale that is nevertheless amusing. The sheer gall and highfalutiness of Thorpe and many of the other politicians involved in the affair are breathtakingly entertaining. Just as jawdroppingly amazing are the steps taken by the British Establishment to try to smooth over and tidy away the scandal so that others, presumably more powerful than Thorpe could ever have been, were not drawn in. John Preston has produced a bizarre story that, if it were one of his novels, would be dismissed as too fanciful to be believed.

True political scandal. Brilliantly written exposé. Just wow.

Having grown up in the UK and been drip fed the censored version by the British press, this was really an eyeopening exposure. Very well written, gripping, factual and a real page turner. I cannot recommend this book highly enough. Thoroughly gripping, extremely readable and enjoyable. Plan three days off, you won't be able to put it down.
