Description

“The one-year Bible and Israel Program in our University has been consistently using A Survey of the Old Testament. We find the text informative, concise, and trustworthy with a high view of Scripture and an appreciation for Ancient Near East studies. In addition, the graphics provide our students with photos of biblical landscapes, illuminating charts, and important archaeological discoveries. This is one textbook that our students want to keep.” Philadelphia Biblical University -- William L. Krewson -- William L. Krewson The purpose of studying the Old Testament is to understand God and his redemptive work more fully. However, this goal is complicated by the fact that it was transmitted through a very different language and culture from our own. A Survey of the Old Testament provides an indispensable guide for undergraduate students and other readers by exploring the literary, historical, and theological issues behind the Old Testament and its various books. For each Old Testament book, the Survey addresses background information, purpose, message, structure, and major themes. Chapters introducing each major section of the Old Testament are included, as are chapters dealing with issues of interpretation, geography, archaeology, history, formation of the Old Testament canon, and the Old Testament's relationship to the New Testament. The text is enhanced throughout by maps, photos, timelines, and charts. This full-color third edition of a widely acclaimed textbook has been expanded and redesigned in both text and graphical elements, making it even more beneficial. Andrew E. Hill (PhD, University of Michigan) is professor emeritus of Old Testament studies at Wheaton College in Illinois. He has contributed to or authored several books, including Old Testament Today , with John Walton; The Baker Illustrated Bible Commentary , with Gary M. Burge; and 1 and 2 Chronicles in the NIV Application Commentary series. He has contributed to several academic journals including Hebrew Annual Review , Journal of Biblical Literature , and Vetus Testamentum . John H. Walton (PhD, Hebrew Union College) is professor emeritus of Old Testament at Wheaton College Graduate School. He is the author or coauthor of numerous books, including Old Testament Today , with Andrew E. Hill; volumes on Job and Genesis in the NIV Application Commentary series; the six-volume Lost World series; and Genesis 1 as Ancient Cosmology . He was also coeditor, with Craig Keener, of the ECPA 2017 Bible of the Year winner, the NIV Cultural Backgrounds Study Bible . Read more

A Staple For OT Study

Thorough, historically informed and theologically instructive. They offer you insights into the text that help you see it’s meaning more plainly and with a clarity that only comes from recognizing the structures, parallels, background and themes of the text.

I recommend 3 resources for OT studies that I believe should be a first-choice for anyone approaching it at a seminary level. I personally, am just a student of these things at my own home & have picked up a multitude of resources—these 3 stand tall.

1) Obviously this survey by Hill and Walton, they offer a contextual and formal introduction that is respectfully done.

2) A Biblical-Theological Introduction to the OT by Miles Van Pelt & staff — this Intro is theologically focused, which is sorely missed in most introductory studies today. An overemphasis on the historical can drown out the obvious truth floating at the surface of the entire Bible.

3) The Masters Seminary Old Testament introduction Lectures by Keith Essex, which can be found on YouTube. These are invaluable, fun and easy to consume from a pastor/scholar. I highly highly recommend them.

And if you have room for a few more, pick up Holman, Zondervan or Moodys Bible atlas. The mid-level ones are the most useful. The Sacred Bridge atlas is massive and simply more than the common student can bear. Having the Rose Book of Bible Charts, Maps and Timelines is nice too. Also Biblical Chronology by Jack Finegan is a monumental work of its own type. Manners and Customs of the Bible by either Gower or Hamilton are both equally enlightening. Hope this helps someone.

I am enjoying the book. I had to buy ...

I am enjoying the book. I had to buy it for a class I am taking. The only problems are the mistakes in the Kindle edition of the book. In chapter 9, "...his guardianship and w took the thrpeople appear to have been Solomon’s most appear to have been Solomon’s most obvious political faults..." What does that even say?

leaves you wanting more

This was a pretty good survey - I liked the information. But it was so simple, it left me wanting more information. The simplicity is nice if you need a quick refresher - but not if you want some serious research.

Fabulous!

Hill and Walton have put together a textbook that IS NOT dry and tedious. The graphics, tables and layouts are inviting. The colors are vibrant. The information is relevant and comprehensible. This is a physically heavy book, but it is not a boring read. Bible students including laypersons will appreciate the writing style and the overviews at the beginning of each chapter.
