Thorough and Comprehensive for AIP Beginners

Finished this book today and it was fabulous! I chose this book over The Paleo Approach because (as the author of this book I am reviewing stated, most people like me have severe 'brain fog') I wanted a fast, easy read without the science. It was thorough and did not leave questions in my mind. I feel equipped to move towards beginning this process. While I was not looking for a recipe or cookbook, there are a few in here. And while they do sound good, I don't think they are super creative as another book I purchased (Autoimmune Wellness). I prefer this book that I am reviewing over the Autoimmune Wellness for providing an overall beginners guide to AIP. The Autoimmune Wellness book was quite detailed (a little too detailed in my mind) BUT the charts of foods allowed and other information was laid out MUCH better and more comprehensive (aesthetically). And the recipes in the Autoimmune Wellness book were very creative. So I will absolutely use both in tandem for my new adventure. Now off to find good cookbooks!

concise, infomative and motivational

Eileen is the perfect person to write this great book. If you want to use diet and lifestyle to control your disease you will find all the information you need in this book. Eileen uses diet and lifestyle to control her RA and has been for years. Over the years I have watcher her chase down every trend, article, rumor, piece of conventional wisdom, study, anything that has to do with healing and research it to its bottom most level. To its origin. She has interviewed the researchers on her podcast and bluntly asked them every detail of everything. She interacts with a vibrant community of people who are already successfully using diet and lifestyle to control disease and keeps on top of current research. Her book is informative and inspirational, also motivating.

I am one of the people she interacts with who successfully uses diet and lifestyle to control disease. Eileen sent me two advanced copies of the book (one to give away) and it floored me. So concise, so motivating and so condensed without losing anything. There is a one star review on here that says the book is full of information that can be found for free on the internet. That is technically true but misleading. The information on the internet is mixed in with any bloggers opinion plus inaccurate information plus empirical speculation. Eileen's book is tiny, compact and manageable compared to the eternity of the internet. Not to mention accurate.

The Top 5 Things I Love About This Book

Here are the top 5 things I love about Eileen’s book “A Simple Guide to the Paleo Autoimmune Protocofollowl”:

1. The Table of Contents: That’s right, we’re starting from the beginning. The way this book is organized speaks to how applicable of a resource it is. The sections allow you to easily skip to the information you need when you need it, making it a great reference book not just a book to read once from cover to cover. The sections even go beyond describing what to eat and not eat, there are chapters covering how to eat at restaurants, how to travel, and how to deal with the holidays!
2. “This is Too Hard- I Can’t Do It” – This is probably my favorite chapter in the book, because it is just heartfelt and real. Every person who has ever committed to the autoimmune protocol has had this moment. The moment where they know that this is something they need to try, but their brain freaks out and says its just too hard. Eileen talks about this and also talks about some practical ways to work through these feelings.
3. Its Concise: This book is comprehensive but concise, which is not an easy balance to strike! It covers every aspect of healing from eliminating foods and why, to finding support, to dealing with flares, to circadian rhythms, and how to appropriately detox… that is a ton of material! But each sections lays out the applicable nuts and bolts in a perfectly understandable, straightforward way and then moves on! No fancy science words, no unnecessary fluff just the facts and what to do about them.
4. Its a Resource You’ll Go Back To: How many times have you bought a book about a diet, or a workout routine, or a health fad only to read it once get started and then never look at it again because it wasn’t helpful anymore? It feels like a waste. This book will serve as a reference through your entire healing journey because it covers so much! You will read it now and focus on what foods to eliminate and add in, then in a few months when you feel ready you’ll focus in on more of the lifestyle stuff, then over the summer when you take your first big AIP trip you will want to reference the travel section, and this time next year you’ll be skimming the section on holidays!
5. It is a Truly One of a Kind Book: There is literally no other book on the market right now that addresses what this book does. We have The Paleo Approach by Sarah Ballantyne which is THE book with all of the information, all of the science, and all of the explanation and it is amazing! But for some people, just starting out it can be a bit overwhelming. Then we have a wonderful selection of print and electronic cookbooks all with their own focus and story that have contributed a wealth of information and resources to the autoimmune community, but there is no other book that serves as a go-to pocket guide. No other book that you can hand to a friend and say here: this is what the autoimmune protocol entails. It is truly one of a kind right now.

If you want to get started quickly

I like reading up about things that interest me. But I have friends and family who don't necessarily want to spend the time diving deep in to the science and history and all the why's, how's and why not's of the autoimmune protocol.

This book is a perfect gift for you or a loved one who just wants the CliffsNotes. Don't get me wrong, it has everything you need in order to get started on this exceptionally beneficial, healing, anti-inflammatory way of eating and living. It has the basics of how and why this way of eating works, the underlying scientific principles, the basics of food, what you can eat and what you shouldn’t and why. It breaks down all the other life style modifications that you’ll find helpful along the way. But it also allows you to feel ready to go in a few hours, instead of spending days, week or months doing research. You can still do research after, if you like to nerd out on science. But with this quick guide you can be on the way to health ASAP.

Fantastic overview. I find that in combination with Sarah Ballantyne's Paleo Principles and just a few others for a variety of recipes is perfect. This is just a short read, yet loaded with links that are excellent. These Girls (the authors) all have autoimmune disorders and the books all work well together. No conflicting information. Diet along with exercise, and keeping stress to a minimum are the main keys to keeping autoimmune disorders at bay. Forget the Rheumatologist and all the chemicals, they will indeed kill you and you will not get well. This is a healthy cure or perhaps it heals the gut well enough to keep a person in remission.

I'm 74 and have not felt well for years. I have tried so many methods and they all fell short. The autoimmume protocol aspect of Paleo seems to be offering me my best results by far. At my age, it is hard to incorporate so many changes in your life and I needed a guide. Reading Eileen Laird’s Simple Guide to the AIP is like sitting down with your closest and wisest friend, who is giving you a pep talk backed up with all the facts you need to stop your disease process and enjoy living life again.

There’s no overwhelm of information here; rather, it is an informal chat with just the basics and enough guidance to see you through the transition to the Autoimmune Protocol lifestyle. With an attitude toward focusing on the positive, Eileen explains all the enjoyable facets of the Autoimmune Protocol: the foods you CAN eat and the lifestyle choices that improve your happiness and disease symptoms.

What about all that is missing in this book (recipes, detailed research supporting the why’s of AIP, etc.)? It’s all included in the form of links, available at your fingertips for easy reference. That way, this guide can remain just that and not a two-foot thick compendium of everything that is AIP.

I wish I had had this guide when I first started AIP! It breaks down a very overwhelming and complex protocol into easily digestible parts. One part I especially appreciate is the section on successful dining in restaurants and traveling, something I find very challenging and stressful. Equally helpful was the advice on how to survive the holidays.

Lastly, I just love, love, love the chapters on self sabotage and getting support. They are full of gentle, nurturing, and practical advice from someone who obviously understands our human imperfections and genuinely wants to see us be our best selves.

This book is now my buddy. It stays with me wherever I go, as a ready reference and as a way to simply explain the AIP to others. I have been grateful for the author’s kind and supportive blog reports for over a year and now am happy to have her knowledge and insight close to me 24/7.

This little handbook is, as the title says, a simple guide to the diet and lifestyle that is known as the AIP. The Autoimmune Protocol is a paleo-based diet and lifestyle approach that has proven effective in treating autoimmune related conditions. In true Eileen style, she mobilizes you in this little guide with just enough of what you need in terms of the specifics of the diet: yes foods, no foods and shopping lists. Then she lets you know how to make it easier and how to navigate the bumps in the road. She links back to her blog posts, where her world class (my feelings) journalism fills in the blanks and then some. This guide book makes navigating the AIP doable, and Eileen makes it friend-supported -- as is her way.
