He was a resident in internal medicine at St. John Medical Center in Tulsa, OK; where I was an attending physician in the department of Emergency Medicine. The Internal Medicine residents would come to the ED to discuss the transition of care of patients form the emergency department in to the hospital. It was during one of these encounters that I first met Quyen. He capitalized on the adage that "you only get one chance to make a good first impression". I had never met a resident quite like him. His infectious smile, zestful enthusiasm and eagerness to learn made him a favorite of mine and ED physician staff. He was appropriately and affectionately nicknamed "Happy". He made such an impression on me that I invited him to a celebratory dinner upon completion of his residency. I took the liberty of bringing my two teenage sons along. It was an evening we would never forget. At the time I did not know much of Quyen's personal life. At dinner, I asked him to tell me and my sons a little about himself. What followed was a 2 hours condensed version of the book you are about to read. My sons had lived protected and privileged lives.xa0 I was entertained by their facial expressions as Quyen shared his life story, particularly the journey from Vietnam to Indonesia. It was one of the most memorable evenings I have ever experienced and one that I will always treasure. Over the next several years Quyen and I developed a great friendship and I learned even more of his incredible life. Over my lifetime I have shared too numerous to count encounters/conversations/stories with patients, patients' families, colleagues, etc. Quyen's journey is as inspirational, emotional and heartwarming as any I have ever experienced. It has been a pleasure to watch Quyen's development over the past 17 years. He excels as a physician, husband, father and friend. He can now add author to that list. Congratulations brother.
