All rights reserved. Chapter 1When Boss Yeung first told her about Perfume Bay, she’d tossed the brochure onto the dashboard and reached for a slice of dried mango. Shaking his head, he took the bag, but before he could stop her, she snatched a slice of chewy sweetness. During her pregnancy, he’d begun scrutinizing her, prescribing advice—xadsome backed by science but most by superstition—xadto protect the baby. She shouldn’t eat mangoes, as their heat would give the baby bad skin; no watermelon, whose chill would cool her womb; no bananas, which would cause the baby to slip out early. No water chestnuts, mung beans, or bean sprouts, either. The list of traditional prohibitions grew each time she attempted to eat.As he drifted into the next lane, she told him to keep his eyes on the road. He gripped the steering wheel and told her his plan: he wanted to send her and their unborn child halfway around the world to Perfume Bay, five-xadstar accommodations located outside of Los Angeles. After she delivered, staff would file for a Social Security card, birth certificate, and passport for the baby. Their son—xadhis sex recently confirmed—xadwould give them a foothold in America.“Eventually he could sponsor our green cards,” Scarlett had responded. “For now, you’ll get rid of me. She always navigated on their weekend drives, and with this gift, she pictured them traveling across America together.“Whatever hospital you’d deliver in would be top-xadclass,” he said.“The hospitals are good in Hong Kong, too,” she said. Unlike in China, the government wouldn’t hassle her there for being an unwed mother, wouldn’t fine her or force her to terminate her pregnancy. Women there could have as many children as they wanted.Boss Yeung frowned. Hong Kong was also home to his wife and three daughters.“It doesn’t matter how good the hospitals are in America, if I end up in jail,” she said.She had conceived even though Boss Yeung had pulled out, evidently not soon enough. For once, the method had failed them. Her periods had never been regular, and she’d been into her second trimester before realizing her nausea wasn’t the stomach flu and her heartburn wasn’t from the stress of trying to meet production goals.On the radio, a newscaster announced that the U.S. embassy was evacuating American tourists from Egypt. Boss Yeung stabbed his finger at the radio dial. “The U.S. would save our son.”“From Egypt? Why would I—xadwhy would he go to Egypt?”“From anywhere. After Scarlett turned up the volume, Lady Yu grabbed the remote and switched the channel.Because Scarlett never bragged about Boss Yeung’s position, because she never mentioned him at all, the other guests found her suspect. She was a threat, not because she’d go after their husbands, but because she represented any woman, every woman who could. It didn’t matter that her lover was a stranger to them. The babies slept in a former dining room where a crystal chandelier hung over the bassinets. Cartons of diapers, crates of formula, and sacks of wipes jammed the garages, and closets had been remodeled into bathrooms.Lady Yu led the Shanghai clique of spoiled wives, who were perhaps only a generation or two removed from the countryside. In Scarlett, they despised who they might have been.Scarlett changed the channel back.“Mei you wenhua,” Lady Yu shouted. “Nong min.” Low-xadclass! A peasant! She hurled a magazine at Scarlett, missing wildly and hitting the television.“Tuhao,” Scarlett said. When Lady Yu clawed at her, Scarlett grabbed her wrists and forced her arms down, twisting almost hard enough to sprain. Now someday had arrived with nothing except the baby.The pregnancy had come between them. She buried her face into the pillow. She couldn’t escape Perfume Bay’s bitter scent of herbs, which reminded her of her mother’s foul medicinal brews. Needed a stronger editor

An interesting premise, but not particularly well-written. A working class, rural Chinese factory woman has an affair with her considerably older, wealthier, married boss. She gets pregnant, they do a sonogram and discover it is a boy. The boss has three daughters, desperately wants a male heir, so he arranges to send his lover to an American “birthing facility” ironically called Perfume Bay.

Kind of intriguing - the clash of cultures, Chinese vs. American, rich vs. poor, controlling male vs. a female yearning to be free to make her own decisions- this should make for a good read. But the plot as developed is not very believable and relies heavily on major coincidences. The pregnant protagonist, Scarlett Chen, is a wildly inconsistent character. One moment she is helpless and whiny, getting into a fist fight, dropping someone else’s baby, speaking little English, mostly small and victimized. The next minute she is confident and in control, blithely stealing a van, wisely knowing exactly how to navigate California traffic, able to communicate her needs and choices. The character of Daisy is even more inconsistent - an out-of-control Chinese teen who is a very bright high school dropout with US citizenship, having violent tendencies but a heart of gold. The baby-daddy, conveniently known as Boss Yeung, is a similar yo-yo, along with each of the other secondary characters. It is nice to have multi-faceted people in your story but it’s hard for a reader to get a grasp of any of them if you are constantly wondering “How did that happen?” and “Does that really make sense?”

The story vacillates from careening wildly to meandering slowly through life on the run, and coincidences play a major role, particularly towards the end. You are left wondering, is this supposed to be funny or serious? It is an odd mashup of both/neither. This is not a terrible book, but one that feels more like a first draft rather than a tightly written novel. I wish the author had benefitted from a good editor and given us a better, more consistent story.

Engaging, evocative and provocative too

I loved this book and couldn't put it down! "River of Stars" has it all: the fun factor of a beach read (NPR interview aptly characterized it as an "Asian-American, pregnant, Thelma and Louise"); the intellectual spark for a good book group discussion about immigration, assimilation, love, motherhood, friendship and forgiveness; plus evocative writing (many examples, but the description of a first encounter with McDonald's french fries is surprisingly delightful). Highly recommend!

Disappointed in Development and Depth of River of Stars

I was disappointed by this book and the lack of plot depth. I really pushed myself to keep reading, hoping the reward would be found in a great ending. Instead, it was just as bland as the slow progression and roundabout character narratives that never progressed or excited.
From a cultural perspective, there were interesting elements of class, rural v urban upbringings and assimilation to American Chinese life. However, so many other novels have painted these lessons beautifully with so much more substance. I couldn’t take Hau’s depiction seriously.

A River of Stars by Vanessa Hua is the story of Scarlett and Daisy, pregnant women living in America to give their babies a better chance and American citizenship, Though sent to a secret maternity home under different circumstances, their lives soon become entangled as their navigate childbirth, raising children, and trying to make it America. Scarlett is trying to flee the father of the child, Daisy is try to find the father of her child.

This story had an interest concept for the beginning half of the book I was engaged in the story, However, towards the end of the book the story takes an unexpected turn. I wasn't on board with the route the author took this story and unfortunately that colors my review of this book. It might have been intended to be funny but I just found it strange and inappropriate to the arc of the story. Otherwise, interesting and well written debut.

An Immigrant Story with a Twist

My Thoughts: In a summer of terrific debuts, Vanessa Hua holds her own and is an author I will definitely be looking for more from. In A River of Stars she tells the story of Scarlett Chen, Chinese, pregnant, alone in the U.S., scared, and driven. Scarlett had been sent to Los Angeles by the father of her baby in order to secure U.S. citizenship for the son she carried. Things quickly went awry and Scarlett fled in a stolen van, taking a 17-year old pregnant stow-away, Daisy, along with her. The two reluctantly agreed to work together, winding up in San Francisco’s Chinatown where they hoped to become anonymous. I loved the touching story of Scarlett and Daisy struggling to make lives for themselves and their babies. Unfortunately, I liked much less the parts of Hua’s story that focused on secondary characters such as Boss Yeung, the father of Scarlett’s baby and Mama Fang, who ran the home Scarlett fled from. I just wasn’t invested in these characters and found myself skimming their parts. In the end, A River of Stars was a book that really made me think about immigrants and what it must be like for those families where a child born here is welcome, but his or her parents are not.

Insightful, moving

I've been a fan of Ms. Hua's since her short story collection, Deceit and Other Possibilities. But could she pull off a full length novel? A resounding Yes - among other rewards, River of Stars gave me rare insight into a subset of immigrant culture I never knew about. This is a timely book about the heartaches and sacrifices and courage and character it takes to come to a strange place in hopes of a better life for your child.

A profound and memorable novel with unique, compelling characters

I absolutely loved this novel, and it is staying with me weeks after finishing it. Vanessa Hua's characters give an intimate glance into what it's like to be pregnant, to give birth, to love, to grow old, and most importantly, to be a Chinese woman fleeing a regime of forced abortions and sterilization to seek a safe and fruitful life in America. This story is not only socially and politically relevant, but it is poetically crafted and captivating to the last page. I highly recommend it.
