Features & Highlights

  • Who hanged the headmaster in the playground on the night of the school Hallowe'en Party? Almost everyone in Heppleburn either hated or feared the viper-tongued Harold Medburn. Inspector Ramsay is convinced it was the headmaster's enigmatic wife but Jack Robson, school governor and caretaker, is determined to prove her innocence. With the help of his restless enthusiastic daughter, Patty, Jack digs into the secrets of Heppleburn, and uncovers a cesspit - of lies, adultery, blackmail and madness.

Size matters

I love Ann Cleeves, but I should have done a little more research before I ordered this book. I was so thrilled to find that she wrote another series, but when the book arrived, I was so disappointed in the page count. This book is only 165 pages long. What's more, maybe it was only published in the UK, because I can often scout around and find a good deal, but not with this one. I like a read that I can sink my teeth into. I like a higher page count. This isn't the author's fault; but rather, it is my personal preference. If you have read all of the Vera series, and the Jimmy Perez series, you shouldn't be disappointed. Just be warned: this is more of a rainy weekend read than the her other works.

Good first book in Ramsey series

I do love Ann Cleeves books. Really this one was no exception. The quirky characters were interesting and well thought out. The mystery is not really solvable with the information given and the procedural aspects are light but I liked that Ramsey wasn't so sure of himself. Most inspectors are written as if they are the only people in the world who could ever solve their cases. The prose was interesting, not really straight omniscent, not really 3rd person.

OK Mystery, not fabulous

Love Ann Cleeves Shetland books. This series not quite up to that standard.

and I wasn't disappointed. Well written

I started reading Ann Cleeves earlier books while waiting for the new Shetland and Vera books to come out, and I wasn't disappointed. Well written, although Ramsay doesn't have the strong personality of Vera, and the background and on-going story isn't as prevelant as with Jimmy Perez. But if you're a fan of Ann Cleeves, this series is a must.

another good Cleeves read

just about finished and still no clue who the murderer is

Dull and unbelievable

This book was completely unbelievable. Ramsey doesn't involve his police team at all and instead depends on a local father and daughter to do interviews for him. He is also blinded by his own opinion of who he thinks committed the murder and arrests her and continues to hold her with no evidence whatsoever. Thank goodness Ann Cleeves now writes some of the best mystery books I have read.
