Description

There's something about hitting the open road - especially the back roads of America - that is enticing and appealing to me. In the spring of 2016, my wife and I got the idea to leave our 9-5 jobs behind and take the road trip of a lifetime.xa0When we announced our intentions on our Facebook page, we were overwhelmed with messages from people that said they had always planned to take a trip just like this... but they waited too long. Every person's reason for not being able to go were different - failing health, failing eyesight, just getting too old to travel that far - but each message I read inspired me to do it now, before it gets too late.We set off with an atlas, a handful of state road maps, and a dream of seeing our great nation. We did just that, traveling over 13,000 miles around America. We saw National Parks and Monuments, tourist traps (yes, we saw the World's Largest Ball of Twine) and best of all, met the people who live in the small towns of the USA.xa0If you're looking for a traditional travel book, this really isn't it. This is a diary of our trip, pictures included, all told from my own skewed perspective. For us, this was the trip of a lifetime. We'd love to have you come along on our epic road trip. Shawn Inmon hails from Mossyrock, Washington--the setting for his first two books, Feels Like the First Time, and Both Sides Now. He is a full time author who lives in picturesque Seaview, Washington on the Pacific Ocean. Shawn says he has learned everything he knows by having 400 different jobs. For twenty years, he worked as a Managing Broker of a real estate office. Prior to that, he DJed at radio stations in Montana, Wyoming, Washington and California, sold stuff that you definitely wanted, cooked your hamburgers, fished for crabs, bought for department stores, and traveled the country with the Unlimited Hydroplanes. He is married to his high school sweetheart, Dawn. He has five daughters, a passel of grandchildren, and is the best pal of two chocolate labs named Hershey and Sadie.

Features & Highlights

  • Have you ever wanted to quit your job, jump in the car with the person you love the most, and see what’s around the next bend in the road? I did. My wife and I were crazy enough to quit good jobs, pack our suitcases and head for the open road. We took two months and drove through thirty states, visited more than a dozen national parks, and put thirteen thousand miles of twisting country roads under our wheels. We found once again that the journey is greater than the destination. There’s room in the backseat. We’d love for you to come along with us on our lap around America.

More of an Attraction Blog Than Romantic Travelog

I bought the book and was looking forward to reading it, as there was over 80% 5-star reviews of it already on Amazon. Frankly, after reading it, I just can't agree with this crowd. This book was a 53 day road trip, and was chronicled like a trip log. I started looking forward to the end of the trip when they were in Maine -- just like the author.

A positive aspect of the book was some of the curious and historical attractions where they stopped, which might be interesting if you are hitting the road yourself and are looking for places to see.

However, a very big negative aspect of the book was his regular complaints about poor hotels and bad food. He never seemed to understand that if you are "winging it" and stopping in small towns on the spur of the moment (or economizing), then you need to embrace that and roll with that -- not whine about the results. Ditto with his decision to go thru the Southwest and South in steamy August, all in an attempt to arrive in Maine and Vermont during leaf changing season.

My biggest disappointment in this as a travel book, was the lack of landscape descriptions and interactions with other people. Other than the blue of Crater Lake and the ocean outside his Florida Keys hotel room, the only color mentioned seemed to be the silver of their car. Also, interactions with people were limited to one or two sentences -- max. Guess those weren't the focus of the book.

If you are looking for a good travel book that speaks to the romance of traveling off the interstate and seeing America, I would recommend "Blue Highways" by Heat Moon.

SLOW DOWN AND DIG IN!!

THIS GUY SHOULD DROP THE FICTION AND LOVE STORY'S AND FOCUS ON TRAVEL WRITING EXCLUSIVELY. HE HAS THE POTENTIAL TO BE THE NEXT WILLIAM LEAST HEAT MOON OR AT THE VERY LEAST PETER JENKINS. THIS BOOK READ LIKE A CIRCLE LOOP OF AMERICA IN FAST FORWARD MODE. SO MUCH GETS SKIPPED. SCHEDULES ARE THE CROSS ANY TRAVELER MUST BEAR BUT IT HURTS A BIT THERE WAS NO SEDONA, AZ. NO GRAND CANYON, YOSEMITE, BRYCE, ZION, MONUMENT VALLEY. TO TOUR THE U.P. WITHOUT INCLUDING MACKINAC ISLAND!?! OR WISCONSIN WITHOUT THE DELLS? BEST ADVICE - GET A CLASS B MOTORHOME AND PACK UP ALL THE PETS AND SLOWWWWW DOWN. INSTEAD OF 280 PAGES THINK 425 AT LEAST. TAKE 6 MONTHS IF NECESSARY AND DO THE HEARTLAND/ INTERIOR LOCATIONS STARTING AT YOSEMITE AND WORKING EAST FROM THERE, WINDING UP IN THE HEART OF APPALACHIA. THIS GUY HAS THE GOODS TO MAKE IT A BEST SELLER. HE IS CRISP, CONCISE, SHARP AS A TACK AND LEAVES ME WANTING HIM TO WAKE UP AND REALIZE HIS PLACE IN THE LITERARY WORLD!! GOOD LUCK AND THANKS FOR A GOOD READ!

The way it should be done

This is how a book about traveling across the U.S.A should be done. The book flowed well as Inmon didn't get bogged down with details at every stop along the way. He knew when to stop and had explained enough as there was the next place to get to. Nothing offensive. No massive ego. This book can also be used as a guide to traveling in the parts of the country he went to. Very good read.
