Description

From School Library Journal Starred Review. Grade 3 Up–Dickens's cautionary tale of an embittered, stingy old man learning to be a happier, more giving person thanks to the intervention of four ghosts has long been fodder for holiday collections. From its stark opening spread (&MARLEY WAS DEAD) to the final one with its much more cheerful winter scene, this year's version, illustrated in Helquist's darkly comic style, is one of the best. Some of that credit must go to Greenhut, who provided the abridgment. Sacrificing none of Dickens's rich language, this retelling reads beautifully. The artist uses watercolor, pencil, and pastel to create cinematic artwork that contains amusing details; additionally, there are a number of pen-and-ink vignettes that help set the scenes. A winning combination of sparkling prose and exciting art.– Mara Alpert, Los Angeles Public Library END Charles Dickens (1812-1870) was one of England's greatest writers. Best known for his classic serialized novels, such as Oliver Twist , A Tale of Two Cities , and Great Expectations , Dickens wrote about the London he lived in, the conditions of the poor, and the growing tensions between the classes. He achieved critical and popular international success in his lifetime and was honored with burial in Westminster Abbey. Brett Helquist's celebrated art has graced books from the charming Bedtime for Bear , which he also wrote, to the New York Times –bestselling A Series of Unfortunate Events by Lemony Snicket to the glorious picture book adaptation of Charles Dickens's A Christmas Carol . He lives with his family in Brooklyn, New York.

Beautifully illustrated

I purchased this book for my daughter for Christmas. It is well written for children and illustrated by the same gentleman that illustrated Lemony Snicket's "Series of Unfortunate Events". It is a wonderful edition to anyone's library: young or old.

Great book for six year old

We bought this book for a six yaer old grandson. We are going to the play and wanted him to be aware of the story. THis book is excellent! It has great picturess and is short enough to read in one sitting. The font size was quite good not too big not too small.

A great book for a 6 yr old. Probably 5 to 9 would also like it.

Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol

A Christmas Carol is one of my most FAVORITE Christmas stories. I watch the movies every year. I read the novel every year. And when I find books, like this, that are based on the story, I pick it up. I found the ebook of this story last year around this time and fell in love with the cover, wanting to see how beautiful the story was depicted by the illustrator.

(If you go to Amazon, which is where I purchased this, it's a little confusing. Ya see, there is a hardcover, a paperback, and an e-book. Because of the fact that Amazon allows other people to sell books on there, the sales pages(s) can sometimes be a bit frustrating. I'm confused as to whether the e-book is the same as the one I have now, because it has a different cover; says nothing about Brett Helquist, even though it's connected to the hardcover and paperback that do; and speaks of an introduction and literary critique, which my copy does not have. But that's okay, and didn't effect my rating and review, because that's not why I purchased the book, but I would have been interested to read them.)

If you know the story as well as I do, it's a little awkward reading a shortened version of the whole story because you're expecting words, lines, etc to be there and they're not. The illustrations are amazing, though - seeing the depictions in this book, while reading along to the story, was awesome - so awesome I read it twice before I even shared it with the kidd-os. The details that Brett put into these pictures are great.

My favorite ghost story

This is a beautiful introduction to Dickens's Christmas Carol. My kids love finding things in the illustrations. It's a lovely bedtime book, and the story doesn't suffer at all. I bring it out after Halloween for my holiday book rotation, and have had it for three or four years.

GREAT BOOK FOR YOUNG CHILDREN AS AN INTRO TO DICKENS AND THIS STORY

This is the most beautiful book! I bought it before taking my 7 and 5 yr. old children to the play, for fear they'd be scared, and/or confused by the play. We read it a couple of times beforehand. They loved the play and understood it and weren't the least bit scared by all the dramatics from the old ghosts. The illustrations are beautiful and the story is beautifully condensed. Perfect for what I needed. I highly recommend this wonderful and beautiful book.

Favorite Christmas book

This book is absolutely amazing. I purchased it as a gift but then liked it so much that I bought one for myself. I collect Christmas children’s illustrated picture books and this is probably one of my favorites. The art is absolutely incredible and they were able to keep the main key elements of the story and some key parts. Perfect introduction to a Christmas Carol to a younger child but fun for a family collection.

It's the Dickens!

My grandsons have often seen many movie versions of this story. This Christmas they will hear a version more closely resembling the original Charles Dickens tale. I was impressed with the way this book brings the Dickens' version alive.
