101 Textures in Graphite & Charcoal: Practical step-by-step drawing techniques for rendering a variety of surfaces & textures

If I had seen this first in a store I would not have bought it. The book is expensive for the information you get. Other art books manage to offer better pictures cheaper than this.

Some of the examples are helpful like cast iron, pinecone, and smooth rock. But others are just not all that great like moss, smooth concrete, or marble. It could have been more helpful to show how the examples might have looked in the context of a larger drawing. And some just seem odd as I do not consider broccoli a "texture". The other major problem is the squares are too small to even see the detail - like for the fern. There is also some duplication of the same example shown in graphite and then charcoal. Not sure how necessary that was.

If you are new to drawing you might consider looking at books in the areas you are interested in and they will generally show the textures most useful for you to learn.

Wealth of information here. Covers a lot. Highly recommend for anyone looking to understand shading and textures. I'm retired and getting back into drawing and this book is great! Also there are great you tube videos on drawing and shading.

Great book to buy. Has all kinds of ideas and information plus easy to read and understand. Would recommend this one for anyone...starters or folks that have done art for a while. I bought for a gift and was really impressed..thank you

As many shading techniques as I’ve picked up over my 26 year career as a custom design artist, there are plenty I’ve forgotten. This book is very useful to have at hand. Fur, rocks, hair of all types…it’s all in there. Each texture is presented in 3 steps easily followed.

The almost ten year old artist in our family LOVES this. He is talented in art well beyond his years so needs adult art books, but with demonstrations of "how to" rather than a lot of text (since he only reads at his 4th grade level.) I reviewed it before giving it to him and found it to be excellent for adults as well.

This is a must have guide book for graphite and charcoal artists. I'm mainly a graphite artist and have found this book to be an excellent aid. Recommended.

It's a wonderful book to use their step-by-step examples. This is a "how to" book and will guide you so you can follow each step. Since I cannot draw, it still does no preclude me from tracing the diagram and applying the techniques. Great for beginner's! You will learn much. Highly recommend.

I borrowed this book from the library. I’ve been sketching for about a week now. And made this in about an hour referencing a photo and this book (mostly skin and facial hair still have more to work on). After seeing this I immediately went to order book ad I’m sure I need to own.

In my opinion, I liked majority about the book. It's information is useful for surfaces and textures in drawing with graphite and charcoal.

In the course of using three different beginner books for drawing, I have been frustrated by the lack of instruction for representing textures. This book completely gills that gap, and I will finish learning these techniques before attempting the still life drawings in the other books. Excellent starter book.
