Nice tool to get you to do stretching

The book is well-organized and nicely illustrated. We all know that we need to do more stretching, but then we go blank on what to beyond a couple standards. The book guides you step-by-step for simple daily stretches. There is also a trouble-shooting list of stretching techniques for various physical problems.

Good Stretching Guide

10-Minute Stretching is a fitness guide, with simple exercises to build flexibility. The author goes through the science behind why stretching works, as well as proper stretching techniques. There is a good glossary of terms at the beginning of the book, which is a good idea instead of burying it in the back.

The author goes through the different body groupings, such as Neck, Arms and Shoulders, Wrists and Hands, and so forth. The stretches for each are clearly laid out, with step by step instructions and drawings to help visualize the movements.

There are fitness routines that readers can follow, like Everyday Activities, Active Living, and Injury Recovery. These quick, 10 minute, routines are designed to get you going each day.

I liked the blue boxes that separate important information, making it easy to refer back to when the need arises. There are good charts and diagrams, like the muscles of the human body for instance. Having done some of these stretches due to physical therapy, especially the head, neck, and back ones, the 10-Minute Stretching book was a good refresher for me. I would recommend it to other readers, as the concept is a good one and it proves that it only takes a few minutes to take care of yourself.

Helpful book

I keep this on our coffee table, and we try to do a few stretch routines from it once or twice a week. It's a great book, with lots of illustrations of what to do and very clear instructions. Like the title says, it's perfect for incorporating short stretching sessions into your day, which is so important to do as we age.

Good Beginner’s Guide

Of the dozens of similar books (not to mention hundreds of web resources and videos), this is worth considering for a beginner who prefers a book to a video.
The strong points are that none of the exercises I’ve tried seem to be harmful, it covers basic anatomy and physiology reasonably well, it has good range-of-motion exercises and warm-ups, it seems based on reasonable scientific understanding rather than a misinterpretation of yoga, it gives some good stretches you can use during everyday activities, and the exercises and illustrations are simple. On the less positive side, the book provides a limited bibliography for those wanting to go further (and to weed out the healthy from the unhealthy), and it doesn’t do much for therapeutic/recovery stretching (or when you should avoid certain stretches).
I think the book is well-suited as a good introduction to basic stretching for someone who is reasonably healthy and just wants to experience the benefits of a good simple routine. Of course, it’s in a competitive environment and there are plenty of other resources to consider.
